[ PC Gamer ] Tomb Raider’s system specs released – will your PC survive? - Page 22

I had a look at frame times using my HD 7970 with Tomb Raider, so I wrote a small tool to run the benches and generate some comparable charts. It's based on FRAPS, but not using the built in frame time logging, instead I measure the timings, directly from memory, in real time.

Results look like this:

It's not an optimized run, the really large spikes are probably because I've got all kinds of things running at the same time. But anyway, I generally find it suspicious that slower than average frames are usually followed by a much faster than average frame. Almost seems like it's artificially keeping the fps up.

Note: I cannot guarantee these results are 100% accurate, but the frame times should be accurate to within approximately +/- 1 ms.

The MAX Quality is with everything maxed out (SSAA x 4), rest of them are the standard presets in Tomb Raider.

Do you mind sharing your tool so I could do my own tests?

Sure, you can download it in this thread.

I did do a more optimized run (closed down most things before running), it looks better, but still jittery with in the Ultimate setting using TressFX:

This is HD 7970@1200/1700:

That looks much much smoother, you must have been doing some hardcore number crunching the first time lol.

I'm interested to see if my latency tweaks have made a difference. In Diablo 3 it made a massive difference, but I want to see if it actually shows up on the graph.

The tweaks I did: http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=327922

Yeah, I guess I shouldn't run benchmarks with with SQL servers, multiple dev environments and youtube running at the same time biggrin.gif

And even better I just updated to latest beta driver (13.3 BETA 2), that pretty much fixes the jittery frame times and it looks like they got that TressFX hair better under control:

Same 7970 @ 1200/1700 with 13.3 BETA 2 drivers

It is interesting though that the average fps is pretty much unchanged, but the overall experience is much different.
