Definitely read some guides so you have some idea of what you're doing, what the maximum settings are for certain voltages, etc and keep an eye on your temperatures.
How is that relevant..?

Not quite. The exchange is basically this:

> How do I overclock my CPU?
< What's your motherboard?
> Sabertooth.
< Those sometimes have PCIe issues.

I don't see how PCIe issues are relevant when OP never mentioned having them and is only asking about how to overclock his CPU.

What is the max voltage I should be trying? I'm on 1.35 I think.

I have a i7 950 and an asus rampage three extreme that I built around 2 years ago. I recently decided to give it an overclocking. My only problem is that I'm new to this. I have looked up guides terms and everything. I even thought I would have a go and tried many diferrent settings. Many different values and it all either blue svreens or restarts. I cannot understand what to do. I see people using a term like d0 and c0???????? What does that even mean? And why has every guid been so vague. I just wanna know how to overclock and no matter where I look I just can't seem to understand what there waffling on about. Someone please help frown.gif

I could try and tell you which values to change but you are probably better off learning yourself. here is a guide
http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=122731
its better that you know the basics so that you know what those values actually are... so that in the future you can do it again without seeking help again.

Thank you for the reply. i have read through the guide. and i have a few queries.
It says about the FSB and it being altered and all only i have an i7 and it doesnt use an fsb it has QPI. im not sure as to what to do with this frown.gif
I have also found that im idleing around 45 on stock and stressing at 60-65 on stock speed so i took apart my heat sink and re seated it using antec thermal that has a 8.5wmz and i used the blob technique so it covers my cores perfectly with a thin layer. at first it idle'd at 30 -35 and a few days later (now) is idle'ing at 45 again frown.gif no end of probelms frown.gif

mr rig is

rampage III Extreme
Intel i7 950 3.06Mhz
12Gb 1600Mhz (although only using 1066Mhz annoyingly) Corsair Dominators
cooler master V8 heat sink
corsair TX650W PSU
m4crucial 512Gb SSD

I would be eternaly greatful if you could help me out. I will keep doing research on this although i just need a second or third opinion to confirm and direct me

OK so forget about FSB... in your case its QPI.. wherever the guide mentions FSB that means QPI to you ok..
As for the temps, 45 degrees on air is not too bad. I have an i7-950 that's water-cooled and my temps reach around 70C with my OC (which is not much by the way lol)

The main things to look at in BIOS when overclocking is the CPU Voltage, IOH Voltage, ICH Voltage and maybe even DRAM Bus Voltage. These four things are what I have messed around with the most.
As you put up your multiplier and increase your OC, these values will have to go up also to keep it stable. The art of OC'ing is to get just the right balance. So put up your multiplier bit by bit until it fails..... then bump up these values until the OC works again... then go higher with the multiplier. kapish? DO NOT GO TOO HIGH WITH THE VOLTAGES!! there's a limit to how much your PC can handle. When you mess around with these settings you can fry parts and I cant be held responsible smile.gif
Dont just start windows and thing the OC has worked, you need to stress-test using something like PRIME95 ok.
Keep reading and asking questions in as many forums as you can. Maybe find someone with the same MOBO as you and ask them how they approached the OC.
Good hunting friend

EDIT: Just FYI: I reached a stable OC at just under 3.9GHz with the same CPU... any higher and I have encountered problems. I have not messed around with the settings too much and even though I'm confident I could go higher, I wont try.

Thanks, I have been digging around some more and came across this page http://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?114-How-to-Overclock-ASUS-RAMPAGE-III-Extreme-BIOS-GUIDE, I then followed this exactly after using the xmp mode as my mobo won't have extreme o.c enable. And the x.m.p mode which I found I needed as my ram was only topping out at 1333Mhz. My ram is 1600 9-9-9-24 stock so this has helped that problem so big smiles as that was a headache. However. (Lol) my succesful (Happy face) oc is at 3.687Ghz on a 160 blck and a 23 cpu ratio setting which means i had to slightly alter my ram frequency to 1604mhz as it was the nearest. I had vcore at 1.40v and that topped out and 55º-60º idle and was climbing from 70º- 80º-90 on full load.

I decided to change the vcore to 1.35 so that decreased idle by 5º and the climbing under load a little slower but still reaching 90º
I have just realised in writing this I have to decreaes the voltages until it won't boot up windows anymore and then run it just above that haha.

What would be the safest oc stress test temp over a period of 12 to 24 hours?

You have been a massuve help and Thanks for your patience smile.gif I will keep you informed of my progress if you wish me too
