Can someone explain to me how the Ares II is quoted as the fastest single gpu?

Its a freaking dual gpu 7970 all I am reading from amd posts is "oh we have the fastest gpu on the market Oh look at the ares II its beast". No **** you put 2 of your top of the line GPU's into a single card just like the 690 jesus christ someone give them a cookie.

That being said i could buy 3x-4x 7970s Ghz edition for the price of an ares II (i mean really $1600 usd are they on crack or trying to act like they own the gpu market?). This is what happens when a fanboy who cant see true performance runs a company. Congrats on your $1600 dual gpu card that barely pulls ahead of a 690 and just so you amd fans know:

2x Ares II in crossfire < 3x Gtx Titans in sli plus if you have the right board you can 4 way sli titan's for performance that rips ares II apart 3x sli titans is better then 2x ares II

2x ares II = $3200 usd

3x Gtx titans = $3000 usd

Yep those amd guys sure got it all figured out price there top of the line performer so high its performance cant justify its price vs 690 to be honest let alone titans.

If Nvidia decides to run titan as a mainstream card after 2-3 months of launch and the price hits $700-800 or I dare say 650-675 on sale Amd will never recover.

Amd basically said "hey guys no need to refresh our gpu's this year we got a card out there that smacks down everything." a month later and Nvidia launches titan, if amd now says **** we gotta launch 8000 series now they look like idiots so you cant rly blame them they just should have kept the refresh up cause now nvidia can take the throne of value in compute esp when the gtx 600 series price falls 50-125$ a card when the 700 series is out

Gtx 680 for high 200s or low 300s or 7970 ghz for 350-400? lol gl amd you really dont know how to compete cpu side you guys choke against intel.

Intel uses 4 core processors that smoke amd's top of the line 8-16 cores I mean come on whats the amd strat ?

"Hey guys our product sucks dick lets enable 4 cores that do nothing and be like LOOK EVERYBODY it has MOAR COREZ IT MUST BE BETTA".

Wait till Maxwell or even Haswell release Amd will be out of buisness soon enough anyway too sad if they only stopped playing the sob we want to compete story and went with the we know our products suck in comparison but we price them way better so its a bargain (drop cpu gpu prices by 20-30% that would be a bargin for the consideration of losing 30-50% performance compared to intel/nvidia)

anyway my original question is:

Didnt Titan shatter all the single gpu records upon release? I know the pro oc'ers out there 4 way sli'ed them I saw a few and I heard that 3 of them rips 2x ares and 2x 690 apart so what is the performance increase with 4?

this sounded more like a RANT than a question. You are right. AMD never stated that

Who is going on around saying that the Ares II is the fastest single GPU card on the market? Slap them.

The AMD 7970 was the fastest single card until the Titan was announced. I could buy 4 AMD 7970 GE with 6GB of ram for $2,320 and it would out perform 3 GTX Titans but you have to remember they are putting 2 GPUs on 1 single PCB. Some people don't have room for 3-4 cards like me for example. Nvidia will not drop the price of Titan to $650-$670 because it's a mix of a gaming and workstation card. The other thing is the AMD 7970 still smokes the GTX Titan in compute and for almost less than half of the price there would not be a reason to buy a Titan so I would not consider it a value card.

AMD did well yet again this series and I'm happy for them. Also AMD's 8 core processors are actually quad core modules and AMD is finally focusing on IPC so be ready for FX to rise again. Enthusiast parts like the FX series and Core i7 x79 socket barely make any profit for companies like Intel/AMD. Sony and Microsoft will be using AMD APU's in their next generation consoles so I doubt they will be gone anytime soon.

I was hoping to upgrade from my GTX 470 to a GTX 700 series or AMD 8000 series but I guess I have to wait till Q4

The Ares II is still the fastest card on a single PCB.

The Ares II was released at $1,500 because it was the fastest single card on the planet. They never said it was the fastest single GPU--although a single 7970 was before the Titan showed up. They said fastest card. It was the fastest card. In fact, it still is, and in most cases will spank a Titan by a good margin. So will a Nvidia 690.

If Nvidia mass-produces Titan at an $800 price point (assuming they even can), that changes very little, because it's still demonstrably slower than an Ares II or any other "7990" part that shows up on the market. AMD helped ASUS design the Ares II, and therefore already has a proven design for a mass-market 7990 card anytime they want to release one. And they have a mature GPU design that yields GHz-capable parts as a matter of course. AMD can release a 7990 at a competitve price to anything Nvidia can sell a Titan for. (And a Titan at $650 is a pipe dream. They'll sell these rebranded workstation GPUs at $650 the same day Intel starts selling octo-core Xeons for $500. That will happen roughly 72 hours after Hell freezes over.)

Titan is nothing but a low-volume halo product, and I doubt that Nvidia will even make any money off selling it. The number of mainstream users who will buy one just isn't enough (and OCN members are far from representative of mainstream users). It did get them a lot of publicity, and they can brag about the "fastest single GPU on the planet." But it doesn't change the game unless they can put two of them on one card and out-perform an Ares/7990 or a 690, at a reasonable price point.

AMD rant?

The Ares II costs as much as it does because the production was limited to 1000 cards. It's more of a collector's edition and it comes with a water cooling solution ready to go. The Ares II will easily beat a single Titan as long as there are no CF issues. 3 Titans should scale better than 2 Ares II.
