Why low end graphics cards collect dust faster than high end one?

I have 2 low end(8400gs and gt 220) and 1 high end (gtx 680) gpus

The low ends cards collect dust really fast.The heatsinks are clogged with dust after using them for a few months.

The 680 doesn't get dusty at all

Why is that?

I think it's due to the higher average temperature.

It's a computer!

cooler design?

The GTX680 is larger, and the fans more powerful, so I imagine dust will tend to pass through the unit rather than get stuck

it could just be the fans are spinning so fast on the higher end cards, they dont allow for dust to build up, or they allow a much less amount of dust to build up.

low end cards don't have shrouds, they* have an open design.

The idle fan speed of the GT 220 is 3000rpm, while this 680 is 1000 rpm, while being able to move more air than 220's fan

In all seriousness, I think it is due to the card's design. I've had a 5870 who's fans found spin in reverse for a few seconds upon boot to kick off the dust, then spin regularly afterwards.

I put a 4650 in my girlfriend's PC (prebuilt but has a very good PH2 960T), and beforehand I removed the HSF and OEM TIM, replacing it with PK1 (I also replaced the SB HS TIM w Antec Formula7, and the CPU TIM w PK1 and swapped the stock HS Fan for a Delta PWM 92x38mm 86CFM/11.9mmH2O unit while adding a 120x25mm front fan as an intake and swapped the rear 80x25 28cfm fan for an 80x25 48CFM unit, changing it from exhaust to intake). Temps for the CPU dropped 11C IDLE(!) and 14C Load, 7C/19C for the SB, and 14C/21C for the MB VRMs prior to installing the newly-TIM'd GPU.
Prior to changing the TIM, the 4650 ran hot enough that everything else increased by 5-9C just in idle.
Afterwards, and with a custom fan profile, I was able to overclock the card by 31% Core / 22% Mem and there was a maximum of a 2C Difference in the other components as compared to without any discrete GPU.

Being an OEM case, the setup is essentially "ridiculously stupid", but it's also a reverse ATX layout. This means that the Fan is facing up, sitting below the PSU, and in a house built before WWII (I think it was built in 1930). Needless to say, even after hundreds of hours cleaning the house with a magnifying lense, dust accumulates faster than strippers at a bachelor party.

My solution, at least temporarily, was to build a shroud for the GPU. The Case has 5 PCI Slots, and by the time anything else will be occupying the remaining expansion ports it will be in a different motherboard much less a different case. That meant that I could do it "right".
I used some light-gauge aluminum sheets and a few different types of brackets to make a 4-slot cooler. Essentially, the air is taken in from the outside of the case with the help of a fan, it cools the GPU + VRAM + VRMs, and then exits via a blowhole I cut from the top of the case with the help of another fan. The whole thing was very easy to build (it looks like "Ventilation Duct 2.0"), and with the 2 helper fans the airflow is quite good, enough that the card dropped 6-11C, but it no longer uses or affects any other air in the case.
I used filters over both of the openings, and the card is dust-free 5 months later.

It used to require an intervention at least once a week!
