Help Wanted with Budget Build

Hello Overclock,

After completing my build at the end of the year my girlfriend mentioned she'd like me to do one for her. She's decided that she wants me to do it now that it's tax time but doesn't know where to start. I will be doing some looking around as well but thought I'd turn to you guys first because I got so much help here when I was getting ready to do my own. If you guys could help me with a mock up it'd be greatly appreciated.

- $600 budget. It's not set in stone so it's flexible but within reason.
- I currently use Intel but figured since AMD runs cheaper I would post here. CPU can go either direction however within budget.
- main uses for PC would be average browsing and casual gaming. She's into Final Fantasy so I'd like her to be able to run max.
- i don't want to dismiss the idea of SSD but I'm unsure if she'd need it currently.
- i'm wanting to put a bluray drive in since she owns so many
- she's set on a red and black case with window

nothing fancy just a basic build. with spring training starting my mind is elsewhere so if I left out any needed details I'll gladly update. Thanks in advance guys. smile.gif

Raidmax makes low quality cases. I would try a Thermaltake Commander MS-I red edition. It''s a lot higher quality but doesn't break the bank.

Also might go with a Phenom over the FX.

thanks for the heads up on the quality of Raidmax. I'll mention it to her and try to convince her to continue looking around for another red and black case. I'll also show her the one you mentioned. thank you.

I'm not familiar with AMD so please overlook my noobish question but why would you go with Phenom over the FX?

Sorry for replying so late, but the Phenom outperforms Bulldozer CPU's clock for clock.

I would say that while an FX-4300 + HD 7850 build can be made with this budget, it's overkill in cash and power consumption. This PC user can be satisfied with a Socket FM2 APU based PC. This can be had at a fraction of the budget (i.e. $400, with SSD), and the rest can be spent on another productivity-oriented device such as a tablet. I seriously urge considering this alternative. Trinity APU is also the most power-efficient mainstream CPU + GPU solution on the market (the FX-4300 + 7850 would consume much more power even for basic web browsing), which stands to improve with the release of Richland APU mid-year and then dominate with the release of Kaveri APU end-year, both on Socket FM2.
