How do I setup an FTP server on windows 2003 server (please walk me through) - Page 3

Even easier than IIS might be filezilla server. I had one running in about 10 minutes under Windows 2000 Server.

To set your static IP, click START then RUN then type CMD and press enter. You'll get a black box with white lettering. Type "IPCONFIG /all" and press enter. Make a note of your IP address, your default gateway, and any and all DNS server information.

Go to the Network applet in Control Panel, open up your adapter, double click on the TCP/IP Protocol, then change it from dynamic to static. Assuming your current IP address is 192.168.1.5, set your new static IP to 192.168.1.55 so you don't have to worry about any other system getting the same IP address. Put all the rest of the info in as it was at the CMD prompt - default gateway, subnet mask (almost certainly 255.255.255.0) and the DNS servers. We can cover reserving addresses in your router later if you really want to.

Then set forwarding for ports 20 *and* 21 (some routers just have common ports already set up, so it might just say FTP) to that new IP, i.e., 192.168.1.55. You need two ports for FTP... the control port (20) and the data port (21).

From there you just need to install filezilla, and create a user in it. During the user creation process you tell filezilla where that user's home directory is and what rights he has. There are checkboxes for read, write, create, etc.

Be careful with your ID! Anyone now will have access to that service on your machine. Don't pick a simple username/password and definitely DON'T use your regular username/password. I'd recommend you set it for read only, that way no one can mess with your stuff even if they do break in.

Does this allow logon's when the machine is logged out? What's nice about server, is the ftp services still runs even if no one is logged in.

Keep in mind that you can't access your FTP server from inside your network by using the external IP address.

Routers, for the most part, do something called Network Address Translation, or NAT.

You have one IP address to the rest of the world (whatsmyip.com will tell you that if you can't figure out where in your router's config to find that info), and one internally. If you're "inside" your network, you ftp using the actual address of the server on your network... 192.168.x.x. From OUTSIDE your network, you use the public address (again, see whatsmyip.com).

The reason we set up port forwarding is to tell the router that if any traffic comes in on the public IP side AND it wants to go to either port 20 or 21, then give it to *this* IP (the one you specified when you set up port forwarding... the internal 192.168.x.x address).

Happy to help more if you still have trouble. Rep bump appreciated if this helps you at all.

Yeah, filezilla server I think asks if you want to run it as a service. Either that or it defaults to running as a service.

Good thing about filezilla is that it runs on pretty much anything from NT on up. And it'll do SSL FTP transfers, too... for free.

So filezilla also encrypts incoming and outgoing info? I'm setting up this FTP server to get music and such at school or anywhere else i'll most likely have 5 max users by giving usernames and passwords to some of my friends. So i'd be setting 4 accounts to read/copy only and my personal account to full access. Also will I need ISS installed when using filezilla? And im not using a firewall. Should I use windows or can someone recommend me one?

I'm writing a walkthrough for doing this through server 2003 right now. I'm hoping the FAQ's will be open soon so I can post this in there.

Nice! PM it to me when you get it finished. Or email it to me > chosen6 (@) gmail.com

For some reason its near impossible to set one up. Being behind a netgear router with quirky options and a apparently non working 3rd party ftp software (bulletproof). Eh, it probably my error even when using all the info in this thread and websites on google i've looked at I still cant set one up successfully

EDIT: DOH! Too slow, was typing this at work lol.

Oh hey lol you need to go to your routers IP in an internet browser.

1. Hit Start
2. Hit Run..
3. Type in "ipconfig"
4. Now write down the IP for Default Gateway, and your IP on the network. (Should be the Default Gateway's increase by a little Ex: 192.168.1.3)
5. Open IE/FF and type in http://(that ip you just got)
6. Look for "Virtual Servers" on Belkin Routers, The "Advanced" section and "Port Forwarding" on Linksys Routers or consult your manual.

Port: 21 to 21
IP: Your IP on the Network
Make sure you check off "Enable"

Now find out your ip again (www.whatismyip.com) and go to ftp://(youriphere)

It should work this time.

I use Cesar FTP it uses port 21. All FTP programs i've ever used use port 21. I've never had to setup port forwarding for 20.

There is a specialty case in which you need this port 20?
