If it's something random/fun/for the lulz (batman AC/AA /CoD/BF3/ect) I start the game on Normal.

If it's anything horror I choose the difficulty that cowards avoid at all costs.

If I enjoy a game enough during my first play through and think it would be a challenge/fun to play through the max difficulty (God of Wars/ Uncharted/ MGSs European extreme FTW) I bump it up.

Oh and for the record Ninja Gaiden Black on max difficulty for the OG Xbox isn't that hard, didn't even last me four days. I could only imagine what gamers today would say if even a moderately difficult game like NGB was released today........" Tecmo needs to patch out bosses this is too hard" . rolleyes.gif
In a case like yours TC when sharing a gaming experience I conform to whomever my partner maybe, if it's my best bud I pick HC/VH make him suffer till we win (like your friend made you suffer) devil.gif but if it's pretty much anyone else normal or below is fine as it's more for fun. thumb.gif

I hate switching down the difficulty takes the challenge out of most games especially in the Witcher 2. You're thrown in the game at normal level without that great of a tutorial and left to defend yourself with bad weapons/armor against pretty strong opponents until Chapter 2 I couldn't play on normal mode, and at the first part in chapter 2 where you're attacked by the spectres and dragur it's insanely difficult to kill them all on normal with the swords you have as they do far more damage than you do to them... anyways I hate changing difficulty, makes your character in any game feel overpowered and the game unchallenging

I voted no, but the only time I dropped the difficulty once after a month of trying the same area.

Only when necessary, and very seldom.

I normally play every game on the max difficulty setting, and I rarely change it; occasionally, however, there are those bosses that I simply can not see myself defeating, and I lower the difficulty. I hate to do it, and it usually takes me several hours to get to this point, but eventually I'd rather just move on with the story/game in general than spend several additional hours on a seemingly hopeless endeavour.

I have lowered difficulty before, but only after exploring every option available. I would prefer to start the game from the beginning over that. It is a since of accomplishment.

Thread Starter
Well the whole thing about it was that my cousin called me a quitter after we both spent 4+ Hours trying to Beat 1 Boss, and never getting more than 25% of the bosses health down. (Just in case you aren't familiar with MGR the Final Boss has 200% Health... so Yeah couldn't do more than 25% damage to that bastard.)

I like a challenge, but I like to enjoy what I'm playing as well so I'll vote yes. But in your case, I may start over entirely. Sometimes playing on the higher difficulty just isn't worth it to me, since the game simply 'cheats'. Playing against, exact reaction times, rubber band AI etc. are no fun to me.

In most cases I start on normal then work my way up. Bunch of masochists in this thread. tongue.gif

It depends... if I enjoy the game, I will not lower the difficulty. If the game is a chore to get through, then I'll lower the difficulty to get through it (I can't stand not finishing a campaign... I'm a sucker for any and all story modes).

Example: I enjoy the Call of Duty campaigns. I play them all on Veteran, and don't lower the difficulty. Back when COD4 came out, I was playing the level, 'One Shot. One Kill.' and the part when you have to escape was darn near impossible on Veteran. As soon as you leave the big building you start that part in, you come to a lot surrounded by some tall buildings, with abandoned buses parked around. At this point you have 4 enemy choppers dropping troops in on all sides, as well as numerous groups running in on foot, and to top it off, a pack of German Shepherds chasing after you. The only way I could ever get through it was sheer luck.

Claymores down for the dogs (and enemies coming from behind), then shoot and throw all my flash grenades and hope that the enemies stumble just long enough for me to make it into the apartments. It would normally take me about 15+ tries for that part alone (and there was one other level that was a pain), but I refuse to lower the difficulty.

On the flip-side... I bought some THQ game pack off Amazon a few months back, and in it was Homefront (along with other games). Well I finally decided to install and play through it (after watching Red Dawn). The game is just not that good, compared to other AAA titles. It just feels incredibly sluggish, and the AI is a joke. Eventually, going through the campaign on the hardest difficulty, I got tired of re-doing parts after dying and just lowered the difficulty so I could finish the game.

Go hard or go home!

I try to accomplish the task by redoing it. Sometimes look for hints on the web. Last resort I lower the difficulty, being if I carried on i would not be here to type this out - hammer to system biggrin.gif
