Sure, amazing graphics and good physics can get you immersed in a game, but if the game is horrible, and the controls are wonky and the story/plot/script is bad, it won't matter how perfect the graphics and physics are. Yet you can have games that look like utter crap, yet play amazing and people play them 20+ years later...

Graphics is fine, but its one of the lowest requirements in a game I can think of.

Well, firstly this is a tech demo and it's not supposed to be a perfect implementation, i.e, clipping on the face isn't as important as showing how cool the hair move.

Secondly, I expect this new tech by AMD will be extremely similar.

And each to their own. The most realistic things move and act for me are a big win. I like the animations in Max Payne. I think they did a great job there. They worked hard and making them realistic and also, subjective to what the character is doing. If done right, this can be the sort of stuff that, while modelling, is just drag and drop. model the hair, assign it to be done with Physics, then leave. Awesome.

Tech demo's should look next to perfect vs the same idea implemented into a game. So if it looks bad when all they are doing is showing hair moving over a static character head, I can only imagine how poor it would be in a game. And considering it will put a huge amount of stress on hardware, while doing nothing for our games, well... can't see it.

I hope AMD's stuff isn't as silly and useless as that... but who knows... It's mostly for marketing and such anyway.

As I said, graphics and animations looking very realistic is a plus, but it won't make a terrible game good. Sad thing is, graphics and gimmicks like physics seems to be higher on the checklist than character development and plot/script these days.

Theres a reason gimmicky games and stuff like this gets forgotten quite quickly but people are still playing NES Mario and such to this day and will be 20 years from now. Good games are good, regardless of graphics quality. Doesn't work if you reverse that though...

I would just like to clear up a few things...


1. PhysX is purely a software library, just like Havok is, and therefore can be run on the CPU alone.

2. AMD did have an equivalent to CUDA, it was called Close to Metal. This has been depreciated in favor of OpenCL and Direct Compute.

3. Real-time fully legit ray-tracing actually does exist, but currently requires a dedicated PCIe card and the hardware isn't quite fast enough for games yet (most likely due to using only 90nm tech):
