Or there is more to this than is being said. Like you stated, they could be using a combination of techniques, which would make it require DX11 to run. It's certainly not unreasonable for it to require more than just DirectCompute alone.


There is one week until release, time is running out to be revealing any more surprise features.

Really we are just arguing semantics here. As I read it a DX11 feature is a feature that is part of a DX11 feature set like Shader Model 5 or hardware accelerated tessellation. While you apparently understand is as: DX11 feature an effect generated by a combination on directcompute and possibly DX11 features.

Tressfx is a feature of the up comming game Tomb raider. Tressfx in turn uses features from directcompute and possibly DX11. So does that translate into Tressfx being a DX11 feature? I according to my interpretation no but it might be that Tomb raiders marketing team meant it in the way you interpreted it.

Also it seams that Tomb raiders marketing team does not call it a DX11 "feature" but a DX11 "effect". Which would be more easily interpreted as some a new kind of implementation of DX11 features rather then a new DX11 feature. If you get what I'm saying.

Whatever the case a doubt it would be fruitful to argue about it any further.

I can agree with you on this. Right or wrong it still looks damn cool! We'll find out in a week! Here's hoping some videos get posted up of the new feature in action. smile.gif

The whole "a new frontier of realism in PC gaming". Yes maybe for hairdressers. Now with the help of AMD they can simulate real hair physics, see how the hair behave after a hair cut. So awesome

Many people will find the concept amusing and laughable... but honestly, hair has sucked in even the best looking of games... I'm excited to see how this pans out.

You've been working so hard in this thread to bash it's rediculous. It must be a slow day for you.

Overly hyped? Of course it is. Welcome to the world of GPU manufaturers, this is how they sell stuff. NVidia knows this, just look at CUDA, PhysX, and more recently the Titan. Do they overstate stuff? Of course. That's reality. It doesn't mean that something like this isn't worthwhile. Sure, this isn't the first time hair has been rendered decently. This just gives developers something to work with, instead of reinventing the wheel with every game/physics engine iteration (or just straight up giving in and making statc hair or an expanding-compressing blob as has been the trend.). THAT is what makes me happy about it. I mean, you said it yourself: No one is rendering hair properly.

As for the TR screenshots, of course they are overdone. It's the first instance we have seen of TressFX, they want it to stand out.

I won't make assumptions, since you haven't said, but I really, really hope you are not trying to say good things about PhysX, and its useless, unrealistic twirly sparkles.

TressFX utilizes DirectCompute Rubers. Use some google-fu and educate yourself next time before calling people names.
