[DSO] AMD teases tressfx: “a new frontier of realism in PC gaming” - Page 50

Apparently it isn't just TressFX That Nvidia GPUs are having trouble with but high settings in general, found this over at Hardocp. Since everyone is showing benches, thought it might be relevent.

Hi Brent. You can try using the latest beta driver however, please note that we are aware of major performance and stability issues with GeForce GPUs running Tomb Raider with maximum settings. Unfortunately, NVIDIA didn't receive final code until this past weekend which substantially decreased stability, image quality and performance over a build we were previously provided. We are working closely with Crystal Dynamics to address and resolve all game issues as quickly as possible. In the meantime, we would like to apologize to GeForce users that are not able to have a great experience playing Tomb Raider, as they have come to expect with all of their favorite PC games.

Hi Brent, this isn't solely a driver issue. The developer needs to make some changes on their end to fix their issues on GeForce GPUs. This will require code changes to the game.

Those are replies from Nvidia, and can be found on the Hardocp homepage.

So, it's slightly gimped for Geforce in the game, eh?

Interesting.....apparently Titan whips it around in benchmarks/actual performance. (according to reviews....not first hand observation.....i am poor)

I'm running it at 60fps (to the TV), Ultimate settings with fancy hair.

The TressFX stuff uses DirectCompute which GK104 is lacking in compared to AMD 7 series cards

Well, NVidia are working on drivers, since Crystal Dynamics gave them a working build very late, but they also said the game needs to be patched to fix some things that are NVidia specific.

Re: [DSO] AMD teases tressfx:

I was just watching some play through videos. And the TressFX makes the hair look like it's flowing in water.

The 500/600 series will always suck at tressfx because of their awful computing. Hopefully NVIDIA improves computing on the 700 series, otherwise Titan will really be the only reliable card for TressFX on the green side (other than brute force with dual GPUs). Not sure how much this feature will take off though, if we start seeing it in a lot of games NVIDIA might be forced to improve computing on their "mainstream" cards if they want to compete with AMD.

The question that I have yet to find an answer to is: Does tressfx actually run across two or more GPUs? That is to say in a dual GPU setups are the compute calculations distributed evenly over the two GPUs or is it limited to just running on one GPU at a time?

Yes, Dont know if its just my rig but when you have high precision ticked it makes the hair flicker quite a bit. But with that unticked its looks good from normal play distance and most cut scence, But you can still see a flicker when up very close.

1080 bench mark at ultimate, But play the game with texture quality at normal with high precision unticked.
Have only noticed 1-2 slow downs in cut scenes when it gets up close.

TressFX still has a long way to go. First playable scene with Lara and it instantly fails! She's upside down and her hair is glued to her head. Not major, still looks good. Still fun to play.
