3570k doesn't overclock

Thread Starter
So i just got my shiny new 3570k and i was trying to overclock it. I wasn't familliar with overclocking an Ivy bridge chip so i went with this guide to help me out: http://www.overclock.net/t/1198504/complete-overclocking-guide-sandy-bridge-ivy-bridge-asrock-edition.
I have followed the guide to the letter but i can't even seem to get a stable "overclock" of 3.8 Ghz. I've tried upping the Vcore to1.3v but no succes. No matter what i do, it just BSOD's (0x124) within 5 minutes of prime95 while getting only 75c tops (in the 1.3v case).

I don't get BSOD's when i stress it on default settings, staying under 55c with a VID of 1.23

What could be the problem? Is there a setting i have overlooked? Or do i have the luck of having an awful chip that doesn't overclock?

Not OCing to at least 4.2GHz is very unlikely. Try disabling the highest C-State. Don't use a manual voltage, instead set it to offset voltage mode. Start with +.05 offset and set LLC to the 2nd lowest or medium setting. Set your multi to 40 and let us know what happens. If 40 is stable go straight to 43 and if 43 is stable try 44. You most likely wont get 45 stable with that low of an offset and the LLC set to a low setting but you should at least get to 4.2GHz.

There is always the chance you got a chip that just doesn't want to OC but if you can't hit 4.0 then I would get that thing exchanged.

I have been using these settings, tried Turbo Voltage up to +0.1v and it just doesn't go beyond 3.7Ghz:

CPU Ratio: All Core
All Core: 38
Host Clock Override (BCLK): 100.0 MHz
Spread Spectrum: Disabled
Intel SpeedStep Tech: Enabled

Intel Turbo Boost Tech: Enabled
Additional Turbo Voltage: +0.004v (tried up to +0.1v)

Internal PLL Overvoltage: Disabled
Core Current Limit: Max (500)
Long Duration Power Limit: Max (500)
Long Duration Maintained: Auto
Short Duration Power Limit: Max (500)
Primary Plane Current Limit: Max (500)
Secondary Plane Current Limit: Max (500)
GT OverClocking Support: Disabled

Volts:

Power Saving Mode: Disabled
CPU Core Voltage: Offset Mode
Offset Voltage: +0.005v
CPU Load-Line Calibration: Level 2 (of 5)
IGPU Voltage Offset: Auto
IGPU Load-Line Calibration: Auto
DRAM Voltage: 1.5v
VTT Voltage (VCCIO): Auto
PCH Voltage: Auto
CPU PLL Voltage (VCCPLL): Auto
System Agent Voltage (VCCSA): Auto

And for C-states:

Enhanced Halt State (C1E): Enabled
CPU C3 State Support: Disabled
CPU C6 State Support: Disabled
Package C State Support: Disabled

Can i exchange the cpu just for not overclocking well? I always thought it had to be unstable on default settings before you could. Then again, if i didn't want to oc i would've gone with a regular 3570 instead of K.

Could it be my PSU isn't handling the load? Because it produces a high pitched buzz when stressing in prime95.

You have a 850watts good quality PSU.Hell no! WIth my G-650,i can handle 1.4V OC.Even with my old PSU,CM 460W,it was enought for 4.5Ghz OC.

It might be possible for the PSU to be faulty, but that would not be my first guess. A high pitched buzz could be the fan or just some 'electrical noise'. (I've had power supplies of external harddrives 'whine' at me when I connected them to the wall socket.)
Ofcourse, this isn't desired behaviour, but it doesn't have to mean it's faulty.

Let's try getting an overclock first.
I would try setting the C-states to 'full-speed' instead of 'power-saving' (as mentioned in the linked guide) and see where that gets you, before we start jumping to conclusions.

asrock boards tend in some cases to be bad overclockers. try to find out more about yo model and the bios it has. maybe a bios update might help?

edit: did u put all cables from the psu in the board?! not just the one main cable but one more additional near the cpu?
try setting OC by core and set on every core the multiplier u want.
also disable c1e and try to get it stable with a fixed voltage.. after that go for offset. maybe this helps.

I updated yesterday using the UEFI internet flash option. Now it says its up to date.

All the cables are in place, I could try and play around with the c-state settings.

Prime95 also tests RAM. Have you made sure your RAM is good? Are you overclocking it? If your RAM is new as well or has not been tested for stability, run Memtest from Windows (or at least Memtest86 from a flash drive at boot--different program, similar name).

I have been running these on my old mobo without a problem: http://www.corsair.com/en/vengeance-8gb-dual-channel-ddr3-memory-kit-cmz8gx3m2a1600c9b.html. I have them running 9-9-9-24 on 1.5v. Have to admit i havent ran memtest on them. But the BSOD is 0x124 so i haven't looked into that.
