Windows 8 search function suck?

post #1 of 7
Thread Starter
After using the final release of Windows 8 for a week or so I can't help but notice how bad the Windows search is on it in comparison to Windows 7 for my use.

First off there are no folders in search results! o_O So annoying because half the things I do a quick search for are folders.

Second is that when I search for a program or a file or something I have to then the files option. Instead why can't they just automatically combine all like 7 used to then allow you to narrow it?

Any way to fix this?

Yeah. This is an issue.

What I used to do: Open My computer(Win + E). Use the search bar(Same as W7)

What I do now : Installed Start menu 8. (Free, by the guys that make ccleaner and defraggler). Now I have a start menu search like in W7.

One nice feature I liked in the explorer search is the 'search ribbon' options. You can filter out based on file type (Ex: Search only for folders). I don't mean 'arrange by type'. Don't remember if its there in W7. smile.gif

I use Start8, so really my windows 8 experience has been the same as windows 7 yet I have all the perks of 8.
The OS really isnt bad once you tailor it to yourself. SP1 should smooth some things out as well.

Boot straight to the desktop, windows start menu is back. Really never see metro unless I open it on my other screen. The new Task Manager and taskbar works great

Only thing that sucks is no disabling desktop composition, but still uses less v-ram then aero did.

Also Start8 gives you the same start menu as windows 7 and the search is the same as windows 7, and works great at that.

Yea, I like the ribbon options as well! It is a nice improvement. The win explorer search is much better than the start menu search.

I still get the same search issue with the iorbit start menu and along with the many other win 8 start menus. They give the same results as the normal metro results. frown.gif

I dont get the same search as I did with windows 7 with start 8. I'm fine with the metro start menu now. I don't mind it. In my use I actually do like it better now that I have given it a chance. I just don't like that the search results layout is changed for the start menu.

Pokki is my favorite new start menu so far. I use it with metro.

Yeah, thanks for bringing that to my attention(funny how I didn't notice that. I guess I kept using the explorer search)

So, this guy over at superuser.com had this idea:
Create a Autohotkey script like below
Code:
#O::
Run %A_WinDir%\explorer.exe
SendInput ^etype:folder{Space}
return

This binds "Win + O", and it takes your cursor straight from the desktop to the search bar in windows explorer and adds a "only folder filter".
It skips opening the explorer-using the mouse to click on the search bar-apply folder filter.
Short and sweet. Hope it helps you thumb.gif

So you hit "Win + O" and it opens this :
