BF3's community has been among the most annoying of any game I've played; they'll whine until DICE removes their dreaded enemy gunner's flares, break the below radar perk against IGLAs/Stingers, and nerf the hell out of a number of weapons. BF4 is going to have to be EXTREMELY impressive at first glance/open Alpha/Beta for me to consider it.
First person shooters of all kinds usually have pretty poor communities. It's a very aggressive and competitive genre with with a fan-base full of people that do not like losing. People will get killed by something a lot, they'll whine and say whatever it is is OP and if the developers listen, it will get nerfed. This is what every modern FPS I've played has been like minus a select few games such as Counter Strike (and even that has its fair share of whiners).
I think it's a little silly to dislike having variety in a game. The beauty of it is that you can pick and choose exactly what you want to play. You don't have to play rush or play on Metro. There's literally something for everyone and most of that variety is done fairly well. Of course, that's just my opinion.
I do have high hopes for BF4, but that's because I feel DICE is going to try to add what they couldn't or didn't get a chance to implement in BF3 in BF4. I'm not sure about mod tools, but stuff like VoIP and battle-recorder, possibly commander or something else that encourages squad-play and whatnot. BF3 has a nice formula, but it needs refinement and I think that's what BF4 is going to do. I might just be extremely optimistic, but I really do feel this will be twice the game BF3 is. I might also be building myself up for disappointment, but we'll see.
