However, if you want retina/QXGA (2048*1536) and are not in a hurry to buy, I highly suggest waiting to see the development for RK3188 tablets. Currently, Chinese tablets sporting retina display come with either the Allwinner A31 (Cortex A7 1.0GHz quad-core, PowerVR SGX544MP2 300MHz) or Rockchip RK3066 (Cortex A9 1.6GHz dual-core, Mali 400MP4 250MHz). The RK3066 has good CPU but weak GPU while the A31 has good GPU but weak CPU. I have the Cube U9GT5 (RK3066) and Nextway F9X (A31) and neither is ideal although the Nextway F9X does perform better. It's nowhere near the Nexus 7 in terms of responsiveness although the A31 does win in certain benchmarks.

Battery life is also a bit of an issue (although the Ainol Novo9 Spark with its 10,000 mAh battery is ahead on this).

As far as product refresh, those seem to go by fairly quickly with Chinese tablets. Seems like there's something new every 2-3 months. However, it's not really wise to buy the latest models right away since those tend to have bugs. You want to wait a little bit for the platform to mature and get better community support.

Forgot to mention this earlier, while I don't think FullHD/WUXGA (1920*1200) or retina/QXGA (2048*1536) Chinese tablets are ready for prime time just yet (battery life and processor deficiency), 1280*800 tablets with the Rockchip RK3066 or Samsung Exynos 4412 work pretty well. Caveat, pricing is pretty close to mainstream branded devices (e.g. Nexus 7 $200, TF300T $350, MeMo Pad Smart 10 $300) particularly after factoring in shipping. I don't think the savings is worth sacrificing local customer and warranty service in this case.

Heck, if I could have bought a branded device with the specifications I wanted (7" 1280*800 IPS+built-in microSD and 9.7" 2048*1536 IPS+built-in microSD), I would've gone with branded. Unfortunately, those don't exist yet. *sigh* Wish Asus had released a $250 Nexus 7-like device with microSD instead of the $150 Asus MeMo Pad with VIA CPU and 1024*600 display.

Ainol Spark got a new Feiyu modded 1.35 firmware, has extremely good performance and market-support is awesome. With 720mhz-1200mhz clocks everything runs even better than with my old Ainol Hero tablets, which were also customized with roms/OC/lauchers to boost performance.

Btw, RK3066 2048*1536 tablets had a problem with memory leak (hardware/firmware issue). From what I hear it got fixed a little time ago with a firmware update.

Regardless, its Mali 400MP4 (250MHz) GPU just isn't fast enough to deal with the 3 megapixel display.

I've replaced 3 Chinese knockoffs. Could have spent my money more wisely.

Ainol Spark got AOKP 4.1.2 firmware now, and pretty good CM10.
Havent had any problems with the tablets yet.

If you ever buy china-tabs, never ever buy it on random.
Good example are those no-brand pirate-samsung tablets that are a complete mystery on what hardware they have inside.

Hardware accelerated video playback is iffy on my Nextway F9X (another A31 retina) with CM10 even when I tried the developer's suggestion to use BubbleUPnP paired with MX Player (HW). Oh well, good thing I don't really need it for video playback. Haven't tried the 13.04.11 version of either AOKP or CM10, though, so don't know if this issue has been fixed.

Got to say, though, ever since Allwinner released the SDK 2.0 for A31, the tablet's been pretty fast and stable even on stock. It's pretty great for reading ebooks, comics, email and web browsing. Caveat, mine only has an 8,000 mAh battery and battery life is still nowhere near the iPad's. Among the A31 retina display tablets, I believe the Ainol Novo9 Spark has the biggest battery so if I were buying now, that would be my choice. Alas, when I bought my F9X, the Ainol was still on 2-4 weeks pre-order so I just went with the least expensive A31 tablet available.

From early reviews of the RK3188, I'd say the A31 chipset is the better choice for retina at the moment. It's a bit more mature and most of the bugs have been worked out, not to mention there are now custom ROMs available. That said, the chipset to look forward to if you're into ultra high resolution displays is the Samsung Exynos 5250. I believe this is the same chipset used by the Nexus 10 so obviously, it should be able to handle 2048*1536 no problem. One manufacturer (SmartQ) has already announced a couple of tablets that will use this chipset, one of them a 9.7" retina display (SmartQ Ten5).
