Mac Pro Dual X5690 overclock

Thread Starter
I currently have a Mac Pro whit dual X5690 (3,46 GHZ) that I personally upgraded. My question is : Can i overclock the CPUs ? I know they Can Reach 4.5 GHZ ON AIR but can I do it on a Mac Pro?
If not can I put the processors in a Windows PC , overclock them and put them back in the Mac Pro? Will the overclock stick or will the processor clock back to the previous frequency? If it doesn't stick is there a method to make the overclock stick?

The overclock is controlled by the motherboard and not by the processor, you'll need to go into your motherboards BIOS or mac equivalent.

As far as I know the mobo in the mac pro offers no overclocking features so your only option to overclock them in that hardware configuration would be software OCing which is a no go on OSX. Even on Windows it's not a proper option and the chances of finding software able to adjust the base clock of the board is very low. This sort of Overclocking is pretty unreliable and needs to be reapplied every time you re-enter the OS.

You can overclock the chips in an enthusiast motherboard but OC's don't "stick", they're done through the mobo BIOS/UEFI and if you move the chips to another system after overclocking them you'll just have the normal values again.

The only method of actually having them both overclocked is to build an EVGA SR-2 based windows/linux machine.

And the chances of hitting 4.5 on air are very low btw.
