X1950XT Nightmare! Yes, it was [mostly] my fault...

OK, so I got the ATi X1950XT from Sapphire. I knew that there were some driver issues with this card and that even the latest 6.11 drivers from ATi were not working with it. I had read that all that was needed, was to install the 6.10 from the CD that came with the card and all would be well, until ATi finally release some drivers that support the X1950XT...

What I didn't know however, was how screwed up the 6.10 drivers on the CD were and how they'd prevent games being played...

I tired Oblivion first, as this is the game that I had to compromise graphically the most with when using my X800Pro. I turned all the eye candy on and fired it up. It seemed fine for the first minute or so and I was just happily admiring the nice HDR effects when suddenly I got massive artefacts in the game. These were not the normal artefacts you might see in ATi Tool, but massive blocks of triangular colour towering out of the sky like giant monoliths... This was very unpleasant...

After fiddling around with the in game settings and trying various different combinations to no avail, I went online and found the horrid truth. Yes, I am not the only X1950XT owner to experience this phenomenon. Apparently there is some issue with the X1950XT and ATi's drivers that mean the only version that can be used with it (for now) is the version on the CD the card comes with. Not only this, but using these drivers has, apparently, lead virtually all X1950XT owners to have major problems with various games... There is some weird compatibility issue to do with the drivers identifying the card improperly that seems to have screwed it all up totally...

The only game I can get to work so far, is America's Army. I played it for several hours earlier on today to test the card out and it seems to work perfectly. Strange that AAOL works with the card without problems, but Oblivion (and Civ4) artefact, produce errors and crash the computer with a BSOD...

Oddly enough, 3DMark01SE, 3DMark03, 3DMark05 and Aquamark3 all run though without issue as well...

Anyway, here is the BSOD I get with this card:

As you can see, it seems to suggest a driver problem, which is probably what it is...

I'm pretty annoyed about this problem. This graphics card cost £180.00 (the equivalent of $356 USD / $407 CAD / $451 AUD ) and I would expect, at this level of expense, to at least have one fully working set of drivers for the card... Really, this is appalling. I may have to send this card back and get a different one... Perhaps Nvidia offer a comparable card, at a similar price to the X1950XT and perhaps they have bothered to get their drivers sorted out...

Anyway, bitterness aside, if anybody can offer some help on this issue, I'd be grateful. Perhaps you can suggest some other drivers you know to work with this card and games, or maybe you know of a work-around for this problem? I'd really appreciate some help with this. Thanks guys .

Dude that sucks. ATI needs to get their butts moving in the driver department. Hopefully things will be better for you in the future if you can survive for now.

I have the same card and the same problem, it works fine with America's Army and BF2142. I am using catalyst 6.11 drivers and you're right, they suck. I heard that modded omega drivers work, but I think I will tough it out until ATI gets their buts in gear and provides some support. If I could help I would, but I am in the same boat as you. Doesn't it suck, you buy a great card for a new game, and it doesn't work. It takes me back to the 16mb voodo that nothing was compatible with.

I had intended to sell my X800Pro right away, but I may keep it for a while now and use it instead of the X1950XT. It's mad though... The new card is around 80% faster than my old one and it'll just be sitting around whilst I wait for functional drivers! I want to use my new card now, not look at it on a shelf! Grrrr.

Yeah, I read that quite a few people have this problem. It does indeed suck. I'll look into those modded omega drivers you mentioned. Don't suppose you have a link?

With the stock drivers it made it through 3dmark06 fine. I really don't know why I updated them, but one thing...I am using ati tool .25 beta to OC and controll temps and speeds, two times VPU recover turned on and reverted to and earlier driver (probably 6.8 as that is what is on the CD), it also set the core speed to 525mhz and the ram to 550 or something. I set it back to 648 and 999, but it periodically reverts to the slow speed. I don't know what's wrong, but i still get over 60fps in BF2142, so i guess i'll let it be.

the 6.12 says it supports the x1950xtx, I am at school now, but will download it at home and post back later if it works.

Mine is the X1950XT 256MB, so, I think it is GDDR3? I'm going to look into the WarCat 6.11 drivers and see if they help any. Also the ATi 6.12 beta drivers sound promising.
