New build - Need your suggestions

Thread Starter
Hello all,
I wanna build a new pc for my cousin. It's his first pc and we want it to be future proof.
This pc is intended for hardcore gaming mostly but we are keeping it at single gpu.
After some research we have concluded on this 3 items :
1. Intel Core i7 3770 Quad Core IvyBridge
2. Asus P8Z77-V Intel Z77 Socket 1155 Ivybridge
3. MSI GeForce GTX 660 Twin Frozr III/OC

What do you guys think about these. First of all are they compatible?
Do you have any better suggestions at the same price range?
We haven't picked the rest items yet but we will once we settle this 3 first

Thank you for your time!

If you are going to game on it, you better get the i5 3570/3570K. Its much cheaper, and if you get the 3570K, you could even overclock it in future to get a little more juice out of it
As for the VGA Card, get the HD 7850 2gb. It has a much better price:performance and overclocks like a beast. Get the Sapphire make if you do go ahead

If it is going to be a "hardcore gaming rig" then you need to drop the 3770 for a 3570k. The HT that the 3770 has isn't really going to do much. Then at least with the 3570k you can give it a mild 4.4/4.5GHz overclock without it being much of a hassle or risk for instability. Pick up a decent Air Cooler like the CM Hyper 212 or Thermalright TrueSpirit 140 to achieve a 4.4-4.6 overclock with ease.

As far as boards go, I would stick to an ASRock Z77 Extreme6 or Gigabyte Z77X UD3H. For the price and performance, can't really beat either.

Gaming builds should generally be built around the GPU. Nothing too special about the 660. At least try to get a 7950, which will help keep it future proof. If you must go nVidia then go with a GTX 670. If these cards are out of budget then at least 7870 GHz Ed or 660 Ti.

Like the above, drop the cpu to a 3570k and slap a hyper 212 evo on there, switch the one fan for 2 much quitter ones if you want and you could easily overclock it to 4.5, I had mine at 4.7 perfectly stable for months before I built a new one tongue.gif
And since this is gaming YOU NEED A STRONG GPU. If you're a hardcore gamer then focus some budget on that gpu and ditch the 660 for a better card. You'll most likely want high settings, so a 7950 or a 670 will serve you well. By ditching the 3770 for a 3570k you save 100 and can put that back into the gpu.

What's your budget and give us some ideas of what you will be playing/ doing too. Are there any specific needs you must meet? Do you need a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and os as well?

To give you some ideas, here's the last build I made (the one I mentioned above actually):

If I had to do that one again, I would ditch the signature 2 for an msi lighting or power edition or even a 670 ftw. I'd also not use a disk drive and borrow a friends computer to make a windows usb and install the os that way since I don't need a disk drive for anything else. There's nothing else I really regret, the psu could be switched out for a lower wattage easily but for the price that was a solid deal and the case made it easy to cable manage.
