looking for a little help with dd-wrt firmware choice

Thread Starter
I have a linksys wrt610n v-1 and am quite interested in updating the firmware of it. I have been reading up on it for a few days now, but all the information seems to send you in circles. 1 thing will say to look here and the other thing says not to go by this and it is just confusing me the more i read it. So I am very good with following instructions and can without a doubt flash it if I know what version build of dd-wrt to use. A little info on this router :it has 64 MB of ram and 8 MB of flash. also it is based off of the broadcom 4705 @300.
Well I am kind of hoping someone a little more knowleged of this dd-wrt can guide me in the right direction. Or should I just forget about it? I certainly don't want to brick a good router, however I would like a little more out of it. Thanks in advance. Later Mike

your best bet is to start with the 610 wiki page: http://dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Linksys_WRT610N

read through it a couple times. follow the directions for how to flash on that wiki page. It looks like you need to start out with this build:
ftp://dd-wrt.com/others/eko/BrainSlayer-V24-preSP2/2010/08-12-10-r14929/broadcom/dd-wrt.v24_mega_wrt610n.bin

and then after that you can put what ever build you want on there if you would like to change. I'm running the 14929 build and have had zero issues with it. It is the current stable release.

So let me just clarify this your using the trailed build? Or did you initially flash to the trailed build then flash to the 14929 generic? From what I was reading you cant use the trailed builds, only for initial flash.thanks again Mike +rep for you

Ok so here is my progress. I actually got the firmware flashed rather painlessly, but the internet and wireless was non functional at best. It was probably due to incorrect setting as I am a total noob to all of this stuff and I really dont (and probably never will) understand much of it. However with a full day of searching on what different setting are I got the wireless going strong and the wired portion is flawless. I got the wireless security locked down to,at first I couldnt set any security or I couldnt connect no matter what.So I was feeling brave and decided to try and get my usb printer working off of the router.Well to my surprise I got it working on my wired desktop by doing a custom set up through a port. So, I figured If I can print from the desktop, why couldnt I print from the laptop? After all it is connected with the homegroup and has the shared printer. So I can indeed print to the router connected printer from the laptop but it is going through the desktop to do it. My question is why can't I print from my iphone? Is the printer not being broadcast wirelessly? It would be so awesome if someone could point me in the right direction for some help with this. Thanks a bunch. Mike

Have you ever been able to print from your iPhone? And if so was it using apples air play product? Since your not using an apple router I don't think it I'd possible since their air print protocols are propriety. Unless someone reverse engineered them for ddwrt

I can print from my laptop only if the desktop is on. So I guess it's basically the same as having it wired to desktop through home group printer sharing. But the printer still doesn't show up wireless.
My friend can print to his wireless printer, but it is wireless, with his iPhone and its not an apple printer. I think it is more like something to do with drivers or something like that. I don't know I spent 2 days trying to get it but just gave up.
