GA-990XA-UD3 rev 3 NOT detecting this HDD

Thread Starter
Ok so I have posted in the pinned topic, but because its everywhere and so many people post in there I get lost in the sauce with no spoon. Anyway, onward; my issue is simple really. I have 2 Samsung SSD 840 Series Pro 250gb, port 0 and 1. I have a samsung HDD 1TB on port 2 (tried mixing matching ports cables and everything else) that will NOT detect on cold boot. NOW, if i hot plug ig in with windows up and rolling BOOM. Good to go, restart good to go, bios shows them all. IF i shut down, and restart, drive is gone. I called gigabyte today and the lady said its because it has stuff on it from another system is why it wont load. BUT IT DOES load if i just plug in 1 SSD and it. Only with 2 or more drives, no dice. Im literally at my wits end, I have the FB Bios and i have tried it with the FC. Nothing across the board. It sounds logical what the lady is saying, but then how come it works with just 1 250 and the 1tb?

did you have a raid setup with the 2 samsung ssds?
assuming you have ahci set in the bios what happens when just the 2 ssds are connected?
there is a setting for what mode ports 3 4 5 are set to; make sure that this value is equal to ports 0 1 "mode as sata"

did you setup your ports as esata ?

update your bios to the latest release if you haven't already done so.

if it's an older SATA drive turn on IDE mode for port 4 and 5 and plug it into one of those ports.

op has stated drives are samsung 840s, if 0-3 are ahci, only 4 and 5 have the option of being ide.

ok so check this out, it IS plugged into 4 and tried 5. Here is the thing, I thought it was the sata controller, but its not. I just tried another SAME MODEL Samsung HDD, smaller gig though. On startup bam, worked good. Here is the thing, its almost p[acked and cant even back it up since its so big. What would be on this EXACT HDD as to why it will not boot with windows. It works again if i hotplug it but not on boot, there HAS TO BE something on this disk stopping it from booting. wioth the other drives

the drive that is NOT working on Boot

Samsung HD103SJ Sata Disk

correct! Gigabyte told me it was their controller but in FACT it is NOT their fault, there is something faulty with the drive and i have 0 places to back it up.

exactly my point. If it's an older HDD with a sata interface it's not AHCI compatible and needs to run in IDE mode. I recently had a problem like this where the HDD wouldn't show up unless under weird circumstances after trying all the ports and someone said it has to be ran in IDE mode which you have to enable that mode in the bios which is linked to ports 4 and 5.

did just that and SAME exact thing happened, wouldnt it be safe to say that if it WORKS in hotplugging it SHOULD work in sata port 3? Ill move it back to the other port and leave it in 4 and try 5 both in IDE mode and I can assure you that I have done that and it doesnt seem to be working. The same brand Samsung HD161GJ which is made the year before the 1tb one was made, is fine in being detected. Just not the 1tb (maybe its the size?)
