[Kotaku]From Dream To Disaster: The Story Of Aliens: Colonial Marines - Page 4

I actually KNOW guys on both sides of the fence in this one...

Received the beta copy of Colonial Marines and like everyone else, was blown away. Game looked gorgeous, epic and absolutely amazing.

In fact, I pre-ordered a copy for my employees and walked away...That's how much faith I, and many others had in the early versions. -- Keep in mind, betas were just 1 level...

Some comments:

Now, TimeGate was supposed to receive a product that was just about half way done. ~ Let's get that down as a fact. This game was supposed to be almost finished. Gearbox hadn't even started it.

While TimeGate was working on it, the approvals didn't happen...They'd submit entire levels only to get "No's" from Gearbox and had to re-design the entire level...This happened MANY, MANY, MANY times. -- Just kind of guessing is a complete understatement. ~ I've heard from one of the guys that they re-designed an entire level upwards of 5 times w/out a script because Gearbox said "No".

There was no design input what-so-ever from Sega...and feedback almost never came for these guys. - They'd finish a level and thought it was 100% good to go only to be told a month later that Sega/Gearbox said "No" and it had to be redone.

The work delegation comment is very true...Gearbox has a 100% different work methodology. Gearbox essentially designs everything separately and then throws it all together, there's evidence of this in Borderlands 2...TimeGate designs around a progression and are extremely detailed oriented so, if Gearbox were to deny a level, they'd literally go back to that section and re-design that entire scenario, then start over again.

What TimeGate delivered was because Gearbox was constantly ripping them back in production and forcing entire sections to be broken because of that workflow...

The Demo/Beta worked and looked flawless -- In fact, I haven't heard a person that talked down about the beta, yet. -- The beta looks VERY similar to the demo.

This is 100% a Gearbox/Sega failure. I love some of the folks at Gearbox but, this is absolutely a mess and of course, Gearbox lays the blame on a very successful, small studio that actually tried to do exactly what they were asked. Sadness @ Gearbox. frown.gif

That's my 2c but, just like Duke Nukem...Fail game, is fail.

Oh, Amazon actually offered me the ability to cancel my pre-orders at their expense...+1 to Amazon.

I have no idea how much of this is true or just TimeGate's side of the story. What I do know is that Gearbox is losing credibility everytime they have their name attached to an industry bomb like Duke Nukem Forever or Aliens: Colonial Marines. So here's the short and sweet of it: Gearbox needs to stop accepting projects if they don't have the proper time, manpower, and creative control to produce a quality product.

It seems like this game could've been like what Crysis was and PC only but Gearbox wanted to strip it all down so consolites could have it too. So everyone got a mess in the end. By the sound of it Timegate made a pretty good game and it is all on Gearbox but IMHO that doesn't matter, seeing as how Sega paid Gearbox and they didn't get the product. So, passed on or not, it is ultimately Gearbox that is to blame.

FYI: This isn't a console bashing comment, just stating what I read!
The .ini file that has the list of all Graphics cards and their Graphic "rating" the game uses doesn't list a single card made after 2006. Generally the list has to be editied to include most modern cards. Even my HD 5850 was given a graphical score of 4 / 5 by the game.

Your 5850 came out in 2009, not 2006.

Too true. I keep seeing Gearbox buy out and obtain a bunch of IPs that think they're gonna make money on after, like Aliens or Duke Nukem. They need to learn to set their foot down and finish a game and make it complete. I know Duke was in development for years thanks to George Broussard, but if they were going to finish it, they were going to finish it, they should have spent more time. The fact the game wasn't being handled by 3d realms was a sign of hope enough for fans to know the game would see the light of day and be at least a little bit complete. But no. Rushed out the door.

What a mess... but seriously. THIS ABOVE! Describes the situation in it's entirety.

Well, I guess Borderlands 2 would not be what it became if they had focused on both games equally.

Apparently one scrapped mission involved a scientist following the player around who would turn out to be a spy for malevolent military corporation Weyland Yutani, but this stage was scrapped "because escort missions are stupid," said a source. "We just spent a lot of time trying to make the game shippable."

Now we know that It could have been even worse than it was.

Quote:
The game later had to be optimised for consumer PCs. "We were constantly cutting back more and more in terms of texture, shader and particle fidelity, in order to fit into the jacked memory restraints," said another source.

And then quotes like tell me that all the complaints that next gen consoles need too much manpower to make better graphics, are just lies. From what I've read game development, and pretty much any CGI work, always starts with incredibly high detail assets. Basically there should be close to 0 increase in costs to make games look ten times better (with the same amount of content).
I also get the feeling a lot of people are just covering up how terrible their studios are. Stories of huge amounts of content being cut due to a lack of direction are incredibly common, meaning you actually have the development budget for multiple games in every "normal" modern game budget.
It seems like the only thing that has changed in recent history is that game development studios have become more expensive and less productive. This industry is in desperate need of a reboot.

Of all the franchises to butcher, why did they have to pick this one? Pitchford says he's a big fan of the series and yet he let this mess out the door. That man knows no shame.

Wow... 9 months with basically a mess of assets and code, and BAM a game is born. That is somewhat impressive actually!

The whole project sounds like it was horribly managed from an executive level. Honestly, no story script? How do you do anything without a plan!?!?

It is like... Hey guys here are some random crayons, now go make me a movie in x amount of time. Bye!

I know, to be honest, i'm a little impressed that they managed to rush and release in 9 months, despite how badong (bad+wrong) this game was. And the part about Sega wanting there to be more human vs human combat like COD, made me want to reach thru the screen and smack them.

I love the OLD sega, because they made good games. After they destroyed Sonic, apparently Aliens was next on the list, not to mention all the trash in between. Get it together. The other aliens game for PC wasn't bad, just the graphics were "ok"
