Good idea to sell 6990s, get 7970s? Best 7970 for OC?

I have 5 6990s which I've used for Bitcoin mining, and 2 of which I also use for gaming. Someone would like to buy 3 of them tomorrow for $350 each, and 7970s are around $370 new, locally. I run the 6990s with the bios switch in the OC mode, and I'm wondering if I could make up most of the difference in power by OCing the 7970, and if that would be more efficient than continuing to mine using the 6990s, while I'm paying $0.11 per Kw/h.

Also, the locally available 7970s for sale are Powercolor, XFX, and Gigabyte. Is there a Good < Better < Best out of these, particularly for overclocking?

gigabyte windforce3 has the best cooling on air that ive seen, and gigabyte as a company is reliable and has good customer support from my experience. I would definitely recommend the gigabyte 7970 or the 7970 ghz ed from them.

Ok, the GB 1ghz OC card is $380 atm. The Powercolor PCs is $364, Powercolor is $340, and the XFX Double D is $360.

You do pay a bit extra for the gigabyte card but imo its worth it. Unless you plan on watercooling it.

Canada. Sucks that they're voltage locked.

I've only heard negative things about powercolor and I'm on my 3rd XFX 7970 after 2 RMA's. Not trying to sway you, I'm just sayin' because when I was looking to buy a 7970 I wish more people told me about their experiences. So I'm doing that for you. smile.gif Have not heard bad things about Gigabyte or MSI gpu's

Actually I think I need to elaborate more so you don't waste $400 on an XFX GPU. My first one was physically faulty within 3 weeks, second one had a melt down after 1 month, third one I'm using now is only 2 weeks old. $520 original cost + shipping costs. Bottom line, if you buy from XFX, there's a SOLID 40% chance that you will RMA within the first 3 months, not because of my own experiences, but from reading about many others online. Their customer support is more like robot support. Automated messages without human interaction 85% of the time.

Once again, I'm not mad, I'm just giving a heads up. If I walk down a path and get burned, I won't allow someone else to make the same mistake.

off topic. How much do you make mining? is it profitable?

I'm usually running only 3 of the 6990s for mining, and right now it takes ~4 days to get a 2 BTC payout. A 3 months ago there was a payout each day. So it's getting harder and harder, but that's tech progression for you, and of course there are more people doing it when the value of a Bitcoin goes up. Hopefully, there will be another drop in the BTC value so that it gets easier. It's profitable, depending on how much you pay for electricity. Another factor is the noise level caused by having your GPU fans going at 100% nonstop, and with these 6990s, heat is another factor. With my bedroom PC, I'm usually not mining because of those things - which puts two of my 6990s effectively on the sidelines.

How much Mhash/s do you get with two 6990's? With two 7970's, I get a combined Mhash/s of about 1260. It's not profitable for me at all really. I just mine when the computer isn't being used and I'm at home. It's under water so it's pretty quiet. I'm looking at building a huge mining rig for college since it's free electricity.
