[USNews] Net providers begin warning of illegal downloads - Page 18

In Australia, Telstra the biggest ISP is trialing P2P throttling.

http://www.smh.com.au/technology/technology-news/critics-question-telstras-motives-on-p2p-throttling-20130212-2eajb.html

So what they don't realise, and it's happened before. They are making themselves a target from groups like Lulzsec and Anonymous. remember P2P is used for other services as well...

Yes, but you didn't have your average teenage girl downloading all of her music through Limewire/whatever virus ridden crap they use now back then.

Telstra don't care, they single-handedly limited Australia's internet for years before the NBN came and broke their monopoly on exchanges. I'd talk more about Telstra but I know the post would get deleted thanks to the colourful language I can't help but use when talking about Telstra.

At least someone gets it. tongue.gif

It looks like the people who are more involved in the actual production of the media are pleased to know people value their work enough to get it through "unofficial" channels, whereas the ones who simply put out some money and expect more money in return are oblivious to the finer points of the consumer mindset.

Piracy is wrong because you are making an illegal copy of another person's work, when you are not allowed to.

Piracy is not stealing. You steal nothing the company. The company loses nothing. The people getting paid flat wages, regardless of whether the stock is low or high for a company, loses nothing.

Piracy is copying copyrighted stuff. The original work is still in place.

It's illegal and wrong because the author says "I don't want you copying my stuff" and it is done anyway but there is still nothing stolen or lost.

Piracy I'm talking about is the normal one where the product is not resold (no money is involved).

Your last part is just added repetition. What does it have to do with anything? A simple argument from emotion.

Your definition of piracy has nothing to do with this, the fact that its a copy of a copy doesnt matter. When you buy software/music, you are granted a license to use it as outlined in the EULA. Its not up to you to decide.

Honestly I have no problem paying for things I really want. Here are my biggest issues:

1) Availability. I hate it when companies take something out of rotation or won't release the proper version in your country, then have the audacity to complain when people pirate it. Offer it for sale you idiots!!! What's even worse is when companies purposely offer a crappy version so they can sell a super special limited remastered edition 4 years down the line. C'mon man.. where are the ethics?

2) Convience. I REALLY hate it when I purchase a $20-30 bluray and they force me to watch the previews. Why the hell am I being controlled on something I purchased legally? A burned copy starts right up without any holdups.

3) DRM. I purposely paid full price when they re-released Witcher 2 just to make a statement. I also avoided Bio-Shock 2 and Dead Space 2 like the plague. Super intrusive DRM that slows down your frame rates or monitors your actions is unacceptable.

But my biggest fear is when companies get (alleged) piracy numbers down they'll raise the cost of music and movies. I hate to admit it but pirates are the MPAA/RIAA's biggest competition, and the only reason they're willing to offer deals. Without illegal downloading they own all the power, and a stiff screwing over will soon follow. I'm not advocating crime in any way - I'm just a realest.

Wouldn't be so bad if Netflix/hulu carried new episodes, waiting almost a year to see the new season when I could just as easily go see it on the T.V is just ridiculous, torrent it watch it delete it is so much simpler and faster.

Not entirely, if the law says you can do ______, but the EULA says you can't do ______, guess which one trumps the other?

Got some news of my own (don't worry it's completely relevant to this). Just completed my personal "self-reliance" data acquisition. Most of which was p2p (hey you know any other way to download big files with a slow connection?). I'll post any static I happen across.
