Exciting updates for Product and Reviews pages

Thread Starter
We've very pleased to announce some long-awaited overhauls to the Product and Review pages are coming this week! We've reorganized things to provide more intuitive (and better looking) visual display, moved to the same page system used on the rest of the site to avoid extra Javascript, improved search engine optimization, and more. Here is a breakdown of some of the major changes for each page:

Product Category Listings

We're featuring product reviews more prominently, and filling more of the top portion of the page with from you, the users. We're exposing extra information in a few ways - using percentage approval ratings, featuring product reviews from the category you're viewing, and making the rating stars larger and easier to see at a glance. We're also showing larger product images when we can, and have taken advantage of the space available in the Manufacturer filters to show you more options.

We're also improving the default sort order for products, and taking how frequently a product is talked about on the site and how recently it was talked about into account (along with how many ratings it has, and the average rating). This means that by default you'll see the "superstar" products first - not just things that received favourable reviews, but received favourable reviews and have recently been in frequent discussion on the forums.

Want a screenshot? Take a look at this preview from our friends at Head-fi showing the old on the left, and the new on the right:

Product Pages

A majority of the focus on product pages has been to organize the existing information in a much easier-to-view way. The tweaks are numerous, but a few highlights are placing more emphasis on user reviews, including larger ratings, an average rating breakdown, including quotes of pros and cons right at the top of the page, and moving user reviews up much higher in the display. There are a few other minor layout tweaks to make navigating the page more intuitive that you can see in the screenshot below (again, with the "old" on the left and the "new" on the right).

You might note that the "own it", "want it", and "had it" counts for individual products are missing - we know, and we'll bring them back as soon as possible. That display caused about 50% of the page load time, however, so they've been shunned until they can be brought back in a speedier fashion.

Product Reviews Listing

Finally, we've almost totally redone the way we display the main reviews page for a given product. We've moved the product picture and extra information off to the side and placed user reviews front-and-center. We're also condensing each individual review into a smaller space, and we divided the page into positive and negative reviews so you can quickly get contrasting opinions on a product. You'll also notice you can now give Rep to users who have contributed a particularly helpful review. Once again, a screenshot from our friends at Head-fi:

Along with this release will come a few bugfixes and other minor tweaks, so expect regular release notes, as well. I was just too excited about this stuff to not share it a little in advance. Hopefully you're looking forward to these updates as much as we all are! biggrin.gif

Didn't use the page much in the past, but it does indeed look promising. Might start using it alongside Newegg!

Good. Been meaning to make some bug reports for articles and maybe some reviews, maybe those problems will be fixed. :D Like how clicking on the more reviews button is worthless.

This is live now, by the way: http://www.overclock.net/products/category/cpus-processors

Note that it may take a while for products to show up in the correct sort order. We are now calculating which products are "most popular" using new criteria like which products are being referenced in the forums, and which have gotten the most reviews recently. This should generally show more up-to-date products on page 1 than in the past. However this calculation is taking some time to complete (precisely because it considers so much additional data). Just letting you know because the "most popular" products might take a while to make more sense.

Everybody go write some reviews! post-flame-small.gif
