Would upgrading my CPU Cooler allow a higher overclock? - Page 2

My best guess is you would see a drop in load temps. Which should mean you can overclock more, but how much more is questionable. You might already be very close to your max OC with your setup. At least you would be running cooler though.

EDIT
What is the speed, voltage and core temp on your cpu?

Speed-3.8 Ghz
Voltage- 1.475, I know it's really high but anything less isn't stable
Load temps are 49C

Just letting you know you still have same head room here.
Max core temp is 62c and max cpu voltage is 1.55.
Your voltage is fine. I had 4 Phenom II x4 the need more then that for 3.8ghz.

Well, 49c does not sound that bad. I assumed you were running hotter than that at a load. Crank it up and see what that thing can do. smile.gif

Yeah, I can't hit 4ghz though. Also technically max temps are only 55C because it becomes unstable at that temperature and the 212+ is good, but not that good for over 1.5V. So to actually utilize the rest of that headroom I would probably have to upgrade my cooler anyways lol. But I know I can do 3.9 at 1.5 and when I tried to go to 1.525 which is one setting above 1.5 on my motherboard, the speakers alarm went off and my system shut down. I don't know why temps were below 55C, I guess my motherboard just doesn't like doing over 1.5.

That's the problem, it can't do more than that. I can do 3.9 at 1.5 stable but as soon as I go over 1.5V my motherboards alarm goes off and the system shuts down even though temps are below 55C under load.

Okay, it sounds like to me you are at your max OC then. Unless you find a way around this wall, there is no reason to replace the cooler either. I have not OCed a AMD rig in many years, so I have no advice to offer about the voltage. redface.gif

Like I said, a really crappy C3 stepping Phenom. Almost all of them can hit 4 Ghz with less voltage than mine hits 3.8 at.

Oh, I just see a lot of people in the Phenom II X4 9xx Owner's club running 4 Ghz all the time with ~1.45 volts. I guess they just got good chips and I just got roughly an average one. Then again Gappo's guide does say "Most air cooled rigs will land at 3.8 Ghz with a 2600 Mhz Northbridge frequency." lol that's exactly where mine landed. But Flash says he was able to get a Phenom II X4 C3 stepping to 4 with the GA-970A-UD3, in other words "my boards little brother." I guess he just had a good chip.
