Thread Starter
im planning on getting extreme4 z77, what ram should i get? 8gb or 16gb?

here is compatibility list: http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.asp?cat=Memory&Model=Z77%20Extreme4

i want something that is decent performance but cheap. If i OC the cpu it would be moderate.

Yeah for that price it's pretty good! It's a very OCable ram as well, just make sure when you do install it to check BIOS if it's running at its rated speed. Sometimes, depending on the mobo you may have to set the timings manually.

What CPU are you getting? I ask because it's been my experience that the 3770K is more likely than the 3570K to have a stronger IMC, which will be what determines how much you can overclock your RAM as much as the memory itself. This is purely anecdotal, but it would make sense that the 3770K would be a bit better...

Anyway, regarding the memory itself... Ivy Bridge CPU's absolutely love bandwidth over everything else, and timings are less important than with any other platform I've used, although it is still important to keep them as tight as possible. You shouldn't worry about the DIMM voltage, as 1.65v is completely safe. I have run as hhigh as 1.975v for benchmarking and up to 1.765v for 24/7 without any problems. I don't think you will have to go any higher than 1.675v for any reason, but don't worry about it.

I would personally go for something around 2133-2400 for the best bang for your buck. With 2133, the Ripjaws Z kits are available with timings of 9-11-10-28 and they overclock extremely well. Mushkin has sets available with identical speeds and timings to the GSkill kit.
The Trident X 2400 9-11-11 kits are fantastic, and are definitely what I would go for at that speed.

im getting i5, but i dont know this sort of goes against everything i know. its not on the support list though for mobo, seems to be made for higher end mobos like extreme6.
