Re-use parts from 5 year old Acer desktop - Page 6

Well everybody I have some exciting news!

We are going to Centrecom tomorrow before 12, and buying our parts and building it all afternoon.

My first build was 3 moths ago, and it took 3 days.......I had a few What the F moments but it was silly things like "the power isn't on" for example lol.

So Im hoping I'll have the computer built - in under 3 hours.

P.S. - I haven't totally decided on a case because they may not have the one we wnat in stock like when I wanted the Cooler Master HAF 912 Advanced
But if anyone wants to help pick one for me please fire away with suggestion here >>> Centrecom Computer Cases Link

Im looking for a case with USB 3.0 on the front - 2 of them.
For fans I would like 1x Rear 1xTop Maybe a Fan at the front. -Good fans either way. And hopefully under $100.
Im considering the Cooler Master HAF 912 Advanced
and the Antec GX700 Rugged

And another thing.... My Fans on my thermaltake overseer rx-i are 3 pin, and on the motherboard their 4 pin but there still connected and running....just dont remember what the downside of this is? Like my computer just has those fans simply "running".

Glad to see that it's going to happen! smile.gif

When you plug in a 3-pin fan into a 4-pin motherboard socket, all that means is that you won't be able to control the fans using PWM (that's what the 4th pin is used for). You can only control 3-pin fans by changing their voltage. Some motherboards support that, some don't.

I'm not much of a case guy, so I can't give you much advice there. The new Thermaltake Chaser A31 looks interesting, however.

Billy's new new was built on the 6th of April. I have some time now to update the final result of what we got.
I arrived at Billy's house about 11am. Soemtime around 11:30, Billy's mum drove us to Bundorra Cenrecom to purchase the parts we needed.
My parts were carefully chosen to remain under the $1,000 mark, but of course get great performance in the end and be able to play some/most games which his previous computer could barely play anything smoothly...

I've been trying to access the Centrecom website, but the site must have problems at the moment so I'll just list what I went in with, and what we can out with...

Case Antec GX700 Rugged $79
CPU Intel i5 3570K $242
MotherBoard Gigabyte Z77x-D3H $$149
RAM Corsair 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600MHZ CL9 Low Profile Vengeance Black $69
DVD/CD Drive Samsung 24x DVD/CD Drive $29
Power Supply Antec High Current Gamer 520w $83
SSD Kingston HyperX 3K 120GB SSD $121
HDD Western Digital Green 2TB $94
Plus Windows Home Premium $110
Total Cost $976

I am totally aware to play games, we need a Graphics/Video Card for real Performance, but we wanted to keep under the $1,000 mark for now, and just get a basic new computer. And the HD 4000 onboard graphics can play GTA SA - SAMP Mod on 1280x1024 resolution perfectly anyway so he's happy with it so far....

Of course, like my build, they didn't have ALL the parts we came with intentionally getting.
We came out with the following for our build:
Changes:
Case Thermaltake Chaser A31 $99???
Power Supply Thermaltake litepower 700w $63???
Can't remeber the prices but Im Certain, the toal cost was $976 so I just estimated the Power Supply cost because I remeber the Case was $99.

Originally intened on purchasing:
CPU Intel i5 3570K $242
MotherBoard Gigabyte Z77x-D3H $$149
RAM Corsair 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600MHZ CL9 Low Profile Vengeance Black $69
DVD/CD Drive Samsung 24x DVD/CD Drive $29
Power Supply Thermaltake litepower 700w
SSD Kingston HyperX 3K 120GB SSD $121
HDD Western Digital Green 2TB $94
Windows Home Premium $110
Total Cost $976 - Under the intended $1,000 budget with Geniune Windows as well.
Billy will be buying a new Samsung Monitor someday soon. Also it is entirely up to him if he wants a Graphics Card upgrade in the Future.

Building his computer took some time, as I was going through what parts did what and his 10 year old sister was with us watching which was a bit distracting but i wasn't in a hurry. Billy helped tightening screws, and he installed the Ram. In the process of installing the Ram, i realized my Ram wasn't setup to use the "Dual Channel" feature - will have to fix that one day. I did the rest of assebling the parts and cable management.

Billy's thumbs up approval that the build is complete

Problems that occured during the build:
Just like my computer build, I SHAT BRICKS when I installed the CPU because when I closed the latch....it made a crackling-like sound in the process of this....but mine and his computer are runniing so must be normal.
I wanted to see if the computer would boot (External build process I saw on Newegg's Computer Building Videos) so I tried shorting the Pins with a screw driver and no luck, but the computer was wrking when all wired up in the case....
We struggled to screw in our Kingston HyperX 3K 120GB SSD in the bracket with the supplied screws. We ask his dad for assistance - he's a mechanical enginer- and he said the screws were too small and might risk hurting the threads. So we used some screws supplied with the Case and that did the Trick - or they were the screws we had to use in the first place.....i don't know but its in smile.gif

Cable mangement was a bit easier because I built my computer so I knew what plugs went were.

The case does not have a hole above the motherboard to route the "4-pin ATX 12V power connector" which is in the top right section on the motherboard.
The Sata Power Cables might be small in length or something because I had to remove the front fan and place it the next level up to cool the 2 Drives and Move the DVD/CD Drive to the lowest 5.25" drive bay so the 3-Sata Connectors from the Sinlge Power Cable could reach them and saving me running 2 Sata Power Cables....
We did not cable tie any of the cables....

Installing windows was a succes! Until I went to download Microsoft Security Essentials and it would not accept the 64-bit version. Then I relized Centrecom might've accidentally given us 32-bit Windows 7 Home Premium. Billy's mum rang Centrecom up, passed them on to me, they said I could just use the Serial Code on the 32-Bit Case and use my 64-bit Windows disc and it'll be fine.

Billy's Computer finsihed, replaced his old computers spot. He is very happy with the less than 15 second boot up and shutdown thanks to the SSD
And GTA SA - SAMP Mod is running perfect so he is very thankful to me for building him the computer - which is better than buying a Branded one from retail stores mostly if your into gaming....

Hope everyone enjoyed the adventure and thanks to everyone that contributed in the Thread/fourm whatever its called lol thumb.gif
This is my Second COmputer build this year, 1st one being my own.
If anything else happens I will update when I have time.

Thanks for reading my in-depth detail ending smile.gif Wish I took more Photoes.

Hi
He has the same motherboard as me: Gigabyte Z77x-D3h for $149.

I wish I knew how to use my Fans through the Bios.......is there a Thread/Forum thing on Overclock . com about Fans and Voltages and all that...?
