Gamer looking for a non gamer case!

Hi guys,

Excuse this relatively long post & feel free to skip past most of it as it'll probably be crap.

I am at the stage in my pc career rolleyes.gif when I am stuck between a rock & a hard place. The last of my quite old Cooler Master Storm sniper rig just was sold and will be shipped tomorrow. The only computer I have now is my old Macbook Pro. Obviously, I am looking to build a new system, now I will obviously give my needs and let you guys know what I need the system to do and if possible, whether your a professional or someone starting out, I'd like your opinion.

Firstly, I don't plan on keeping this laptop, as I'm going to uni even this 15" macbook is a bit big, so I'll be using my christmas and 21st money to go and buy an ultra book and text books for university. So I am needing and wanting to build a new system that I can purchase and put together.

Secondly, I consider myself & enthusiast, but also not a hard core enthusiast. I love computers, I love assembling them, buying and putting together the parts and seeing the cool & crazy builds people come out with. I also am into pc gaming, but not in the typical way. I am not the typical trash talking confident cocky and dedicated pc gamer like so many others ( not a bad thing ). I am more into the insides of a computer than the out ( sounds lame I know ) like the architecure of the cpu's, the gpu architechture.

Anyway, I am wanting to put together a new desktop system that is very powerful but not a " gaming " case. I do not enjoy nzxt phantoms, haf x's, anything by cooler master, or big loud flashy desktop systems with crazy water cooling. I want to spend a little on a high quality case that is closed, doesnt have windows agressive fins or anything. I'm okay with relatively fine cooling performance as I don't overclock my hardware, I just choose not to until the system really needs the extra push. Lian-li seems to be the best choice in this category.
I was considering going for an itx build, but then I thought about it and it really limits my choice of hard ware a little bit more than I'd like. I'm looking to build a system that is relatively powerful, ivy bridge, gtx 670-680 is fine for me. With a case that is aluminium and not too big ( mid tower is what I'm looking for, so I can sit it on my desk ). I'm looking at running a dual monitor setup aswell.

I need my computer for : Uni Work, Gaming, Research, Music, Movies and Running programs such as Cubase for music recording.

I apologise if I offended anyone with the comment about me not liking the above cases, I understand they work very well with what they do and out perform some of the cases I'm suggesting.

Although irelevant to this thread, I have just moved to a new area in Australia for university, I am making friends at my uni and work which is cool, and I have plenty of mates back home in NSW, but none that are into pc gaming. I'm looking for a good group of like minded fellow gamers to jump on and play with as I'm bored just playing on a random server with anyone, preferably just kind, cool people that are serious about the game but also can have a laugh. If anyone is interested in playing a game with me, please pm me your steam address so I can add you. I play absolutely any game, until I got rid of my system I was playing battlefield 3 & the witcher. I also play NBA 2k13, Skyrim borderlands, counterstrike, age of empires, dawn of war... really any game. Just looking to make a few online mates who I can play games with.

I apologise for the main content of this post, lol. Looking forward to hearing from some lian li owners / like minded people who know what I'm talking about in regards to a nice case.

If you can overlook the Aluminium part, then I heartily recommend the Fractal Define R4. Best case I have ever owned, and I've owned a lot of them over the years!

Try a Fractal Design case, they are minimalistic, but roomy enough to fit nice hardware.

Yeah OP I'm seeking the same.

I also own a few Cooler Master cases and I need a change of one of them at least.

The issues I have with the R4 is that the door doesn't have the option of swinging open the other way as I like to place my case on the right side of me and or my desk.

Also that there's no independent hard drive activity led.  I like both Power AND Hard Drive activity leds on my computer cases.

Otherwise a nice case.

The Corsair 550D, I hear there's issues of the longevity of the door hinges.

I'll be paying attention to this thread for sure.

That's interesting that I'm not the only gamer who feels this way. I obviously meant no offence about that last cooler master case, as my last " gaming " rig was a cooler master storm sniper. I
m hoping to to hear from someone with a good case, however I'm looking at lian li and they look like what I'm after.

As for fractals design r4, although highly acclaimed, I just don't see myself using that case, it's not particularly nice looking, and it doesn't perform that great, for my own work / gaming computer, I'd preferably like to get an aluminium case, it keeps components much cooler, especially here in Australia. I think many people think of it is a conservative and classy case because it's not like the standard gamer case, however, I find the door to be quite cheap. Also I believe the door is brushed plastic made to look like aluminium? I read some reviews on the case which praise the r4's design and accoustic performance, and I'm sure alot of people the price and features are just right. And as nick said, the door is also another problem for me. I don't feel they've made enough changes from the R3 either.

As for corsairs 550d, I'm not looking for a quiet case. Not only is the sound material very average at stock, it also keeps hot air in the system. If you want a silent case, you also need to put in silent components. Also I can easily pick up a lamptron noise dampening kit and throw that in any kit. A " Silent " rig is not even an issue for me, as I turn my pc off when I'm not using it and when I download games, I usually am either not home, or I sleep with the fan on. Other than that the case seems quite sturdy and well built.

These comments reflect my opinions based on experience with the case. Here are a couple of aluminium cases I'm looking at.
