Firmware update on new drive

Thread Starter
My Samsung 840 will be coming tomorrow. I read through the SSD install guide on this forum. The only part I didn't fully understand was the firmware update process. I'm assuming that updating the firmware on the 840 will wipe the drive, so is there a way to update it before I install windows on it?

Also, I noticed the latest firmware for it is dated Dec 13th. So is there a chance it already is using the latest? If so, is there a way to find out?

You can install the Samsung in a working computer (installed like a storage drive), might have to format & mount it it first and then follow these directions.

To check which firmware revision you currently have on your drive, follow the steps below in Windows:
1) Click on the Start menu
2) Open Control panel> System> Hardware
3) Select device manager
4) Expand disk drives
5) Right click on the drive and select properties
6) Select details tab > select hardware lds from the drop down menu and the firmware version will be displayed towards the right hand side.

You just need to load the sammy magician software. It will tell you FW version and if an update is needed and even update it for you. Pretty sure it is not a destructive flash, all info remains.
