Which "Server" to build , Dual Xeons vs i7 3930K - Page 2

That is the main question "Clock Speed" vs "Cores/Threads".

Well I only assign 1 core per VM, and use that Intel VT-x option.



This are windows xp machines running 1500-2500 MB Page file.

Like I said before I have more machines all with different CPUs, AMD FX 8120 @ 3.6GHZ, i7 3770 @ 3.4GHZ, I7 860 @ 3.6GHZ and all them hit 100% CPU at 20 VMS and run 20-25 VMS. Of course some could run the VMs faster than others, but in terms of numbers of VMs they all run very similar amount.

On an other forum, one that shall not be named, they basically went ahead and said ever since SB IPC has improved so much that for VMs the core count matters more than less higher speed cores. Depending on the workload of course. Not my 2cents.gif

Thank you for the link but the other case its cleary not my case.

It's a guy running 1 System and 3d Applications that does rendering. It's not massive number of Virtual Machines. It's just pure calculation and rendering of CPU on a 3d Software.

Like you see in my case the VM's doesn't work at 100% cpu speed. They don't need speed, however each VM means 24 threads running. This will mean a percentage of CPU usage to run this threads.

If I had the double of the VMs I will had the double of Threads. And having CPU Speed creates the possibility to have more threads in the CPU? Guess not. It only helps the existing threads to run faster.

We are talking a difference of 12 logic CPUS to 24 logic CPUS.

With 8 Logic CPus I run 2,5 VMS, with 24 Logic CPus if was same calculation it's 60 VMS.

Even if the extra clock could make 12 logic CPUS run 3 VMS each, was 36 VMs still and not 60.

Well but still it's 1000€ extra, and i7 could be used as gaming PC in the future, double xeons not.
