PCI x16 solo and x8 when going crossfire.

Thread Starter
i was wondering. i wanted to buy a new graphics card and i just noticed that my motheboard does have 2 x16 PCI slots but changes both to x8 when going crossfire.

does this have any real notisable disadvantage?

my mobo: http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.asp?cat=Specifications&Model=Z68%20Extreme3%20Gen3

my specs:
ASROCK extreme3 gen3
intel core i5 2500K
G.SKILL EXTREME3 3X 8 GO PC12800 RIPJAWS X CAS10 (24GB total)
radeon HD 7850
ANTEC KÜHLER H2O 620 V4
ADVANCE 750W
SSD corsair force 120GB
1 TB samsung something
windows professional 64 bit
radeon HD 7870 <-- planning to buy! ( i will overclock the 7850 to match his core speeds)

just wondered if it really has such a diffrent impact in comparison to 2 x16 slots.

Technically you would lose performance, but in real world you wouldn't even feel anything. Here's an old article

In my personal experience, running 5760x1080 and 2560x1440 I don't notice much of an fps difference from 16x/16x to 8x/8x but the gameplay is smoother with 16x/16x at the higher resolutions.

Just my 2 cents.
