Using KGB - Kepler BIOS Editor/Unlocker is not the best way to unlock your card's bios ! ( posibly only GK106 )

I have been experimenting with unlocking bios on kepler cards ( specifically mine 660 gtx and my friends 660 ti ) and it seems using kgb.exe to do it is not best way.

Why you ask ?

Because it will only increase max value for power limit. Increasing this value is not optimal way to do it, because it seems cards simply ignore this and still start to throttle down boost clock when they reach about 100% power usage.

What needs to be done is not increase max power limit, but "normal" power limit or power target.

It cant be done with kgb, but can with program called keplerbiostweaker. It is a value called Def(mW).

Increasing this value results in your card NEVER running at anything but its maximum boost. It will not throttle itself down, unless you reech 70C.

Increasing just max power limit is almost next to useless- cards will not run at maximum boost even if you increase it 100000% biggrin.gif

Actually I am not sure if it can be done with kgb, I just know its not done with unlock command.
Unlock only increases max power limit, which is not best way to unlock your card
I dont know if kgb has additional commands but kepler bios tweaker is easier to use and has a gui

Yes, KGB modifies the max power target limit and you still need to use a software to reach that max limit using the power slider. Don't you ever say not to use KGB though because it is a very important part of the Kepler overclocking society. And it's easy to modify the default power target using HEX editors.

I know that software is still needed, but even after putting slider all the way up to 150% in msi afterburner, my card still couldnt keep it max boost, it would lower the clock up to 100mhz and boost up and down constantly.
Changing default power target fixed this, now its running constantly at max boost.

I am just saying using KGB unlock command will not change default power target, and that is needed.

OP must be using drugs.... Never is quite an aggressive word, since i sincerly doubt you will be able to run your card at anything above 218watt, without throttleing. It is in fact true, that this method works, just as well as the max power target method. I do not know how your card reacts, i can however tell you, that KGB was never MENT for GTX 660 (it was made for the GK104 chip), it just so happens to also work in some cases, on the GK106 chip

You have no idea what you are talking about.
Only problem is incorrect voltage, which can be modified in configuration file.

And I am talking about power limit, which KGB will modify exactly the same on GK106 or GK104 card ( it will increase max 150% )

I can do the same with kepler tweaker, and my card still won't boost properly without modifing default power target
