Dead Space 3′s microtransaction model didn't go over well with gamers, but it hasn't deterred the publisher one bit. EA's financial officer Blake Jorgensen has revealed all of its games will feature some form of micro-payments.

Said Jorgensen, "We are building into all of our games the ability to pay for things along the way; to get to a higher level. And consumers are enjoying and embracing that way of business."

When EA spoke of a future business strategy where "all of our games" include the dreaded m-word, reactions weren't exactly positive. CFO Blake Jorgensen shared that original statement during the Morgan Stanley Technology conference last week, but he's now used another conference-the Wedbush Transformational Technology conference-to redact that statement. As Gamasutra reports, Jorgensen says he meant microtransactions will figure into all mobile games instead of EA's entire lineup.

"I made a statement in the conference along the lines of, 'We'll have microtransactions in our games,' and the community read that to be 'all games,' and that's really not true," he explains. "All of our mobile games will have microtransactions in them, because almost all of our mobile games are going to a world where its play-for-free

Safe to say I won't be buying any more EA games then.

It's one thing to have a free/reduced cost game supported by microtransactions, but to still be charging full price in line with other games, but then have microtransactions on top, I think that is just not good. I know there used to be cheat code lines you could call up at premium rates in older games for a similar thing (pay to win or pay to advance in single player), but that was never very integrated with the actual game. It didn't have a link to the microtransaction platform on almost every UI...

That's Battlefield 4 ruined then.

All of this is designed off console gaming.
I never felt like I was being forced to pay for anything I didn't want.

So this doesn't affect me one bit.
Some can argue the "state of gaming" blah blah, but that ship has sailed years ago. Consoles drive the industry.

I don't understand why people do microtransactions.
Do gamers these days not like actually playing the game and they just want the maximum level and gear... if you just want that then you're doing it wrong. The whole idea and the fun of games is leveling up/ gearing up/ unlocking things as you get progressively further into or better at the game.
*sigh*

BF3 had ShortCut DLC. I didn't buy it, and still competed without it.
If items can "only" be unlocked through micro, then the game is ruined.

Is anyone actually surprised? It is EA we're talking about.

The way this really only works, is if the game has a long term value IMO. So you feel like you are investing in the games items or characters. Out of all the F2P games the only one I have ever put money into has been TF2. Partially because the game has been around and well established, and because my items I invest in hold value and are transferable. I also have faith in the company behind the game and enjoy their products and what they do for their customers.

Not all microtransaction are pay-to-win though. I've played a lot of MMO where the cash shop are simple vanity items or items that barely affects the balance of the game (IE +5% EXP for an hour). It's just depends on how its implemented. I personally have no problem with microtransactions as long as they're not so enticing that it becomes a "buy it or not level/play as efficiently" situation. For all we know, EA could add simple things like skins or a gun mod that doesn't unbalance gameplay. It all just depends on how EA implements it.

The future of EA games doesn't involve me buying them, then.

If the games were reduced in price, I'd consider it. I refuse, however, to pay $60 for a game, then be expected to be nickle and dimed to death. Ugh, this, and the whole incremental DLC thing really get on my nerves.

I have no problem buying additional content, if it's worhwhile and priced properly. Just don't insult me with on-disc DLC, or take away something from the retail game so you can have DLC available on launch day. Don't make me pay full price for a game, then expect me to pay more after that to get the full functionality of what I paid for in the first place...

I always try to stay neutral, but sometimes it's hard. Especially when a place like EA shows outright greed and disregard for their custumers. But somehow they stay affloat, because so many people are willing to fork out money for garbage.

Depends how it's done. Planetside 2 did a very good implementation of F2P. Sure, money will get you weapons unlocked faster, but you still have to play and improve your own skills to upgrade all the other necessities.

Though I imagine EA will probably sell their games for $60, then sell DLCs, and have a microtransaction for every thing in the game which is the completely wrong way to approach it. BF3 was the last EA game I bought, and probably the last I'll ever buy (didn't bother with DLC map expansions)

If this is like BF3 weapon/vehicle unlocks I wont really care because I earned those legit and it wasnt hard to do, in fact I swear people were asking for weapons/unlocks to have the option to buy because they were too lazy to unlock it themselves.

Same with Mass Effect 3 mp, I could unlock spectre packs easy enough but those that couldn't could pay money, as long as it does not effect me I don't care.

However if it goes pay 2 win where I cannot get something because I did not purchase it, I am done with them.

Nope. FTP games are rising, and will be great competition to this type of stuff. Even a FTP with P2W qualities will be better off, since EA is already headed that way, AND they charge a premium for their games. If I'm going to pay for upgrades, the game better be cheap or free.

and FTP dont have micro transactions?

i play several, myself, and it works for what it is... but those games are not even close to what games like dead space, bioshock, etc, etc... for the most part your free to plays are going to be the ultra repetetive action rpg, MOBA pvp games, generic mmorpg of the month...

some of those will be fun to play, but a vast majority end up being a ridiculous grindfest if you don't throw some money at the game.

I know people hate this idea, but you really have to consider this.. The base price of games really haven't changed much in the past few years, but cost of development is always increasing. They have to find a way to make up the difference and in reality, they could easily justify jacking the price of games up to $80, but instead they're putting out micro-transactions and DLCs which you can just opt out of and they're still able to make that money. Would you rather pay $80-$100 per game or deal with optional micro-transactions/DLC?
