You said "PE = Physical Education is Not Physical Ecersise"

Now who would assume that you are trying to correct my abbreviation? i wasnt even THINKING about abbreviations..

Now when i said it IS physical exercise , i meant that you DO exercise in PE class. I was not defining it..

You see what programming does? You read it like a computer completely out of context. Since this discussion was about technology, and education. The word education goes hand in hand with sitting in a chair, thats why i said it was excercise..because excercise is the opposite of sitting in a chair..

I figured you were trying to argue that in physical education its education only and no exercise, so ive been arguing that the whole time

Well then. This is out of hand.

are you smoking something? Playing sports comes natural after you play a couple of times.

It's impossible for me to know what you were thinking about.

Empirical methods are far better at providing knowledge than purely theoretical. I didn't make the same connection as you. The closes i've ever come to programming is changing XML files in JA2 v1.13.
Reading like a "computer" is more of a biproduct of reading and having this discussion on the internet. Interpersonal non vocal/written nuances in communication are impossible

I suggest a handshake to conclude this.

A lot has been said already, but I'd like to throw in my two cents into this particular topic that has been coming up quite often as computers become more prevalent in society.

In my opinion, to suggest that software development is an essential skill and should be taught in the same league as mathematics and science is asinine.

Although I agree that opportunities are lacking for students to be exposed to the field, those that are passionate about computers eventually find themselves majoring in the computer science anyway. The lack of actual software developers to fill current open positions is for a much different reason.

Most people are not fit for the task.

Even of the minority who initially decide to major in computer science, there is generally a large portion of the class that find themselves struggling with developing software, and either change majors or drop out. That, combined with the fact that most employers won't even look at you if you don't have a degree, contributes to the issue.

Actual software development is not all flowers and meadows as described in the video, but most software developers are too passionate to admit that. It can be learned, but it takes a very specific type of personality to attain a level competency.

I suck at coding and never got a desire to learn it, beyond very basic HTML, I don't know what I'd use the skills for. Maybe if I owned a business and was too cheap to pay an IT guy? I think the video is nice and we should teach it in schools for math and critical problem solving skills. I took a short general computing course that was mandatory and I learned most of my HTML skills there, and that was it. I personally have never used these skills since.

In short, I believe you need to be motivated and have a real goal to want to code, otherwise what's the point? Why be bi-lingual if you are never, ever going to use the other language? If not, you'll loose those skills over time. Same applies with coding.

I'm with you.

I learned hardware and not software. I did take several programming classes, including PASCAL, C and C++ (I almost took COBAL and if I did, I could charge whatever I wanted as a contractor). The only time I ever used those skills was to debug existing code (the original programmer "forgot" to comment anything). Other than that I have taken scripting classes, including a couple on PERL. I used shell scripting and perl quite a bit when I was a system administrator to automate routine tasks. Now I couldn't write a simple script unless I took a day and had all of my notes and books open.

Instead of teaching programming to teach critical thinking skills, why not just teach critical thinking skills. Oh wait, most high schools do teach it.

Having a hardware background has always kept me employed at jobs that I like and enjoy doing. Rarely do I do the same thing twice.

I agree with most things, except the no second language part. You should learn at least ONE extra language. And by the way, there's no language called "Chinese".

You could learn to code by having a huge gym sized keyboard with keys that are little trampolines you have to jump on, and a barbell instead of a return key.
Two birds, one stone - genius.
