I started taking philosophy, not only did I LOVE IT, it also taught me to write much better papers. My lowest mark is a 75%, that was my first paper...I didn't know I had to explain the topic, I just dove straight into it. The rest were all A+.

I cannot stress how important philosophy is, although a bunch of first, second and some third years do not appreciate it for what it is and they'll say it's useless. To those people, honestly it probably is but if it got to you, it stays with you.

Wasn't there some people saying Shakespeare did not actually exist and that his work was really the work of someone else, who at the time could not be seen doing such things? But yes I do agree, it was worthless and if anything drove more people away from reading. I don't understand why our society is obsessed with tradition...those traditions had to start at some point in time. Let kids read great books, not some stuff written such a long time ago that the language itself was different. I mean, has Shakespeare ever come in use during life for some important reason? Sure hasn't been useful to me at all, hell I'd even say it drove me away from reading books.

Just becuase you do not understand the psychology, sociology, philosophy and many other things Shakespeare (whoever he was) incorporated into his writing doesn't make it any less true. The man was a genius and without him the English language wouldn't be what it is today, in fact no language would, as he has affected every single language in existence.

What you people are saying is that Socrates, Aristotle, Homer, etc. are useless because they are long dead and have no effect on the world. In fact most rubbish written today has no cultural or intellectual value but to question the greats is like saying van Gogh, Vermeer, Picasso have had no effect on the world thus shouldn't be studied. This shows the failings of our agenda, propaganda driven brainwashing called education.

There's many issues i have with pre-uni/college edu system that i'd like to see changed, but school rarely teaches anything of worth except for thinking. Literature be it english or w/e country you're in is a boring and close to useless subject, before grade ~7 or so i've read over 50-100 , 300+ page books on my own i actualy liked reading but school well makes hate some things sooner or later.

While as i said schools should be teaching how to think i approve only of few subjects that must be in every study programme in pre uni/coll

Biology (this includes partialy chemistry too)
History
Math (my favorite part is still the probability theory/statistics as it gives you the powah to argue over the internetz at many points tongue.gif)
Language lessons (not literature)

As they will contribute to actually being useful no matter what way you go.

Other than that at some point bit of physics .... how many of 25y+ olds who knew what they will want to do after school? Also problem with many nowadays (at least here) is they rush to simply get into uni/coll due to pressure from parents and other reasons, no matter what it teaches simply because they got in budget group which is a bloody waste imo, so many do not work in sector they studied.

I speak/write 3 languages fluently and i wish i could have learned another one or two if not for terrubad teacherz/if i had the chance earlier (german f.e)

Just my 0.02$

There is no Chinese language, just as there is no Scandinavian language or a Bantu Languages even if they to some extent are mutually intelligible.

I'm glad you brought this up and defended it. I understand that people may have no use for certain subjects. And at one point I thought the same thing about subjects that had "no value to me" previously because I just simply wasn't exposed them in a meaningful manner. At least we have such a large world that the people who really do things to advance society can find use in the ancient classics that have helped shape this world into what it is today and where it will go tomorrow.

You know who liked Aristotle? Alan Turing. Without him, there would be no Turing Test and likely no concept of artificial intelligence as we know today.

You know who else liked Aristotle? Alain Colmerauer. He invented something called Prolog, a form of logic programming. Know what he based this on? Syllogism. Know who invented that? Aristotle.

And lastly, for the other guy who thought Shakespeare hasn't affected him. If you are really that dense, then take some more philosophy classes. Shakespeare has affected almost every literary writer out there and that includes movies (because apparently you don't like to read).

You speak english because people like Shakespeare made a lasting and potent cultural impact that benefitted the english language further differention from the German dialects spoken at the time.
If there hade been no cultural prowess made at a grand scale within Englands borders, English would not have been separated from the language in use by the Hanseatic league.

The only thing that seems to pertain to me is coding... All I'm saying is lets actually teach basic skills properly. We need far more funding and attention spent on education. These special interest groups want to benefit themselves. Why don't they simply donate computers, teach teachers or supply them and fund this themselves? Why ask an already overburdened, underfunded, underachieving system to do it for you.

When I see them putting out the money/time/effort, I'll take them seriously.
