sli gtx 260 vs gtx 480 - Page 2

Get the GTX 480. It's more powerful than a 7850 and they can be found for $150 used.
Quote:
how much faster would a 570 be?
the same or maybe a little worse when you overclock it. It uses less power, but it has weak VRMs, so be careful if you want to overvolt it.

I just sold a 275 for $60 on ocn, and got TONS of offers. The 260 is a little slower, so it'll go for around $50. The card is still around gtx 650 (non Ti) performance. Those sell for $100. These are used and lack dx11, but are still worth something.

A golden GTX 480 can be had for $150 on average nowadays. It's still faster than dual 260s in SLI. It's aleady faster than a GTX 295, which is faster than GTX 260s in SLI. wink.gif

The difference will be in your minimum framerates. One GTX 480 is still going to draw less power than two 260s. tongue.gif

IKR . .i want an old DX 10 card even though i have a twice as fast 570 with a just as fast 550ti for physX that uses much less power. /sarcasm
IIRC the 580s had problems with their VRMs. i have no problems OCing to 900 @ 1.1volts on my reference 570 but the 480s can reflash the BOIS to get higher volts and clock speeds but gets much hotter. so without a case that provides decent cooling the 570 would be a better choice but if the OP is interested in OCing, the 480 has a higher potential.

The GTX 580 has FAR superior VRMs to the GTX 570. Reference GTX 570's are very poor overclockers, or at least, they cannot maintain that overclock for long because of poor VRM design. I fear for you 1.1 volt GTX 570 if it's a reference model.... frown.gif

I WILL agree with you that the GTX 480 can overclock better than the GTX 570 can, and with less concern of blowing a VRM. I fold on the 480 in my sig at stock volts and 777 on the core. It DOES spit heat out like a monster, but luckily, I don't pay for power here at college. biggrin.gif The same may not necessarily hold true for the OP though.

GTX 260 SLI are slightly slower than GTX 295.
GTX 295 is slightly slower than GTX 480.
So the 480 would be a very good upgrade I expect around 10-25% faster.
Just a note if you can find 570/ 7850 at the same price as the 480 get any of them.
Because the 480 runs pretty hot, consume double the power of 7850 and is a very loud card on reference cooler.
I have a GTX 470 laying around here and this supposed to run quieter than GTX 480, but once I installed it on my PC it sounded like a vacuum cleaner compared to my HD7950 Windforce & EVGA GTX 670 FTW even on stock settings.
Also a note to the above guys. GTX 570 overclock much better than GTX 480 due to the lower temps and power consumption.
GTX 480s rarely exceed 850 MHz while some GTX 570s can do 950 MHz or even higher. GTX 570 at around 950 MHz is very competitive with a 850 MHz GTX 580.
But reference 570s top at around 850-900 MHz on average. also newer revisions don't explode like the early ones.
