I'm looking to upgrade my hardware in preparation for ArmA 3

Should I buy a 7970 for $400 in preparation for ArmA 3, or should I buy a 7870 for $200 and a new processor.

Thanks for input.

At the moment I have a 2GB 6870 and a 2.8GHz Quad core AMD Phenom

If I buy the 7970, I won't be upgrading my processor.

7970 : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150632

If I buy the 7870, I will also buy a 3.6 GHz tp 3.9 GHz / 4.2 GHz 8 core AMD cpu

i would recommend getting this cpu. it performs really well for gaming especially if you overclock it. what are you using to cool your cpu?

for the graphics card i would recommend getting a 7950. it is the best bang for buck card you can get which would make it a really good investment. this card in particular has the pcb from the 7970 so it has better power delivery and vrm components which leads to higher OC potential.

it is a little more than you wanted to spend but it would give you the best performance/price ratio. you can always upgrade your cpu even further later too

I was pointed in the direction of a 7870 Tahiti. It supposedly has the price of a 7870 with the performance of a 7950.

I also don't overclock at all, and atm I use a stock fan.

Well if I can give my two cents, I bought the 7870 XT a few days ago and it's been GREAT ! Maxed out practically every game (except FC3) and I'm using it with a Phenom 965. I highly recommend given the price. I upgraded from a 5770 so maybe my "WOW" factor is more biased, but all in all I see no reason why you wouldn't be satisfied.

Good luck!
