This doesn't really affect me or most veteran ArmA players, who play custom missions usually in private coop, but after a year of delays BIS has removed more content than what they've added. Let's take a look:
- No more campaign at launch, though they're saying it will be released later on for free
- No more Armory
- No fully functional 3D editor
- No more disguise system
- No progress on AI really, it still sucks
- Shrunk the terrain size of Atlis from 400 km^2 to 300 km^2, then to 270 km^2.
They haven't improved or added much: they streamlined the editor interface, added new stances, added a stance modifier, added a new pace, improved the zeroing system, added underwater gameplay, that's pretty much it. All of the best features that made it look like a proper sequel are gone. I really wonder what BIS has been doing in all these years with all these delays, since as time goes on, all they reveal is the removal of content. I also question their focus with the game.
The latest news about ArmA 3, aside from the removal of a campaign, is about particle effects. For the last year, it seems their main focus with ArmA 3 was on graphics and optimization. They had so much focus on their "Lighting Showcase" and what not, though on both regards the game isn't significantly improved over ArmA 2. Ambient occlusion is worse than ArmA 2, optimization is still lacking. This shouldn't have been their focus, but it seemed to be, and it still disappoints here.
I got a feeling they are giving in on all the whining and decided to dedicate more time/resources into graphics optimization....
this is more or less what I was complaining about this whole thread. people think that they can just optimize the graphics as if they were flushing the toilet or flipping a switch. dedicating time into optimization means they don't have the time/resources to do "other things" like debugging the 400km^2 terrain to make sure you don't fall through the world when hiding behind THAT rock
or other fun little things like a 3D editors that modders can use to build more custom content... so the world shrinks down to ARMA2 level map... which is still not bad considering ARMA2 map is already fairly huge and I definitely did not feel constrained in any way when i play in it. (but then again i'm usually not playing a pilot so... )
Armory would have been nice to have, disguise system I don't much care for in the 1st place. AI wise, well.... lets face it, ARMA AI was never that good in the 1st place
it's like the frame rate thing, if they get to it, they get to it, if they don't, it's been 12 years and beating on a horse's crumbling skeleton isn't going to revive it
campaign wise, i was hoping that BIS finally comes up with a decent one on ARMA3, but i guess there is always ARMA4
ARMA old timers never play the campaign in the 1st place anyway. but can you imagine if ARMA had a campaign like mass effect or KotOR or something like that?
anyway looks like the whiners are going to get their 3 extra frames per second while the rest of us will have to live with alittle less content.
