When you got the file, where did you save it? Default location for most browsers is in /home/user_name/ or /home/user_name/Desktop

Don't worry about login as root, you can do that later in the terminal when you go to install the program.
The program most likely is in one of the following compressed formats: .zip, .gz, .tar.gz, .tar.bz2, .tar, .bz2

I believe it was a .zip that i unpacked to the desktop of my user. I'll try grabbing it again today if the the permissions are still open to at work.

edit:
Well got it. It is a .tgz, thats short for .tar.gz i think. what now?

for firefox:

* if its saved in your home folder, if not just change the path to it before you do anything else in the terminal, command is: cd
in a terminal:

tar -zxvf firefox-2.0.tar.gz
cd firefox/
./firefox

edit:

check out my sig if you need help making a launch icon for it.
