Hey there folks, I'm completely new to overclocking but looking forward to learn some stuff! I'll be moseying on over to the Athlon II B50 owner's club to ask all my questions there lol!

athlon ii b50? is it an unlocked athlon x2? if so when ulocking its difficult to monitor the temps when overclocking. it will read 0c on all cores.

It is an unlocked athlon, yes (specifically a phenom II x3 450 rana, 3.2GHz) though I've had no trouble monitoring temps. AMD OverDrive utility displays valid temps just fine. The mobo temp displays funny, though... like -267 C tongue.gif

Okay. Well realisticly how far are you will to push it and which heatsink are you using
post #5 of 16

I'm willing to push it as far as I can get it to run stable, as long as I can squeeze some more performance out of it. I've noticed as the years go by and games get more demanding I need more and more to perform better but I've had no choice but to turn my graphics lower and lower or find alternate ways to decrease the CPU load. Right now, at this second, I'm using the stock heatsink it came with, however sitting on the table behind me is an Antec Kuhler 620 liquid cooler that I picked up the other day, I've just got to put it in but that's an easy 15 minute fix.

well for the phenom ii chips. max vcore would be around 1.55v so for now i would try and set it at 3.8ghz with 1.4v and increase vcore until it is stable. to test for stability quickly use intel test burn at maximum settings then monitor temps. so probably should use the antec 620

yeah, I'll hook the antec up before I bother doing anything. I'm curious though, when I open up amd overdrive, the slider bars that can adjust the cpu core multipliers they all stop at x16. is that the max that the cores can be bumped? The voltage slider also caps at 1.4, and that is where it was already set. Can it not be pushed a little bit? Or is it just that amd overdrive isn't the best program to use?

From what I can tell, the only way to bump this is to increase the ht ref clock speed and the PCIe speed sliders.

Then again, aren't there ways to do all this from the bios anyways, and just skip the amd utility?

So the multiplier is limited because the chip is not a black edition. So in this case we have to push the frequency, and to oc I would start in bios and not use overdrive. And which board are you running so we don't risk any chances ruinning the board.

ASUS M4 A89TD Pro. From what I can tell by all the gadgets and utilities that come built in, it's an overclocking board. Shouldn't have any issues on that side of things.

Yesterday I tried using one of the board's built-in OC gadgets to auto tune OC, and when I booted it up afterwards I saw that it had changed the HT ref speed from standard 200 to 238. It ran great for a while, but blue screened after several hours of gaming. Just to be safe I turned that utility off, since as of now I have no clue what would have caused it to crash other than general instability from the auto-OC.
