PSU for 3770 + 7970

Thread Starter
Hello, my friend wants to buy a new graphics card to replace the GT 630 he has now, he plans to get a 7970. There is a problem, his PSU is only 500W, is this enough for a 3770 and a 7970? Neither will be overclocked
Also, here's the link to his computer http://reviews.cnet.com/desktops/acer-predator-g3620-ur308/4505-3118_7-35551108.html
It's not a custom build, so that's why it comes with a low-end PSU.

I wouldnt trust an OEM power supply powering a 7970.

http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/amd_radeon_hd_7970_review,8.html 7970 alone takes about 195 watts.

Personally if it was me, I would upgrade the power supply.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182066 would be perfect.

... OEM PSUs are shoddy. Not sure if they can pull rated wattage without it being dirty or having ripple. I've seen horrible Xion PSU's in PreCustomBuilt PCs and I smh at those.

At least get something with half decent components inside please!

Might have to pull a CX430 or something in similar range

your power usage is very low with single cpu/gpu systems

Sorry zeged, I don't think you know what you're talking about. 500w is more than enough. No name 500w? Maybe not.

However, his load might be so low during games like about 200-350w whilst playing games that that PSU might be able to do it without doing any short term damage to anything.

He would be able to run it on a OEM power supply, i had an 8150 and 7970 running on an OEM power supply at 550W.

Upgrading to a good name brand cpu 650+ couldnt hurt, but i wouldnt expect him to run into any troubles with his current set up.

I don't know, the PC itself was pretty damn expensive, so I hope Acer actually tried on the PSU.
