Yea, totally man. All these new codecs are lies. MPEG-1 was totally the best out there. VCD ALL THE WAY!1!

Even beyond, that 'MPEG' and Broadcasting will be synonymous for the foreseeable future; all the pieces of that industry are stuck together with proprietary glue.

The goal of VP9, then, shouldn't be to entirely replace H.265 (a good joke, at best), but to carve out a strong, respectable market space for itself and demonstrate that 'open and free' can compete on technological grounds, not just philosophical choir preaching.

I know i was just pointing it out for people that didn't know but vp9 is pretty close to h.265 from what i saw. H.265 is a better choice at this point in development from the videos i have h.265 is a smaller file with slightly better / on par picture.

  • Having people take external harddrives with them to walmart/bestbuy and transferring movie files from kiosks.
  • Ps4's hard drive better have some serious longevity as writing 100 gigabytes every week and is a lot of wear and tear

Hardrives don't have write cycle limitations, but rather the onoff load cycles. I have a few enterprise nearline sas drives that write more than 25GB per DAY, and have been going strong for 2+ years now.

As for buying a 4K movie, double layer BD is 50GB, there's already triple and multi layer blurays as high as 150GB, storage medium isn't a limitation. Network is.

At the end of the day if you have a 4K TV I'm pretty sure you'll have a good internet connection. Back when I had a 1024x768 plasma my internet connection was still DSL. Fast forward 5-7 years and now I'm using 60/30 Mbps Fios and stream 1080p. By the time I get a 4K TV I'm pretty sure I'll be able to handle regular 100GB downloads/streams.

Did I say it wasn't better? No, it's just not twice as good. That's not the pace this stuff evolves at. A 10Mbps 4K encode might look okay, but it's not going to look as good as a 20Mbps H264 encode. You're going to see loss of grain and it's going to look worse in motion. Don't believe me? Compile the encoder and see for yourself https://hevc.hhi.fraunhofer.de/svn/svn_HEVCSoftware/tags/HM-1.0/

I wonder how much they can compress "rar/zip" the data without quality loss.. I would imagine if they contact win-rar they might have an idea or two.. considering the processing power of the cpu and gpu there should be enough to decompress data and run high resolution video at the same time.. they might actually be able to compress the data more than you would think and still un-pack it without quality loss and reproduce the 100gb file with much less data sent.

Right now only a very small percentage of users are actually heavy downloaders. If something like a PS4 caused mainstream heavy downloading cable networks would quickly become congested and cable internet users will see their speeds drop to 1/3rd of their peak.
