Need advice about Athlon II x2 250 (complete novice)

Thread Starter
Hi there!

I recently bought a new GFX (EVGA GTX650Ti) and upgraded to 8GB memory to my rig. However, Im not satisfied with the gaming experience and I belive it's my CPU that's bottlenecking it all. So here I am; looking for advice about if I can and/or should OC my CPU or just upgrade next milennium when I can afford it smile.gif
Tried to search the forum about advice but as Im not familiar to overclocking in the first place and nothing of what I found applied to my spec I thought I'd just create a new thread. My appologies if I broke a rule or created a double thread.

With that said, here's my specs:
MB: MS 7597 (ver 1.2)
CPU: AMD Athlon II x2 250 64
(old and crappy ****, so that would be the bottleneck I assume)
RAM: 8GB Kingston
GFX: EVGA GTX650Ti (ssc, whatever that means, but it was in bold letters on the box! smile.gif)
PSU: CX500 (Well.. It's 500W. Dont know more than that)

I also have a crappy old keyboard with a cord that is so short it gets in the way of my mousemovements all the time, AND a spacebar so buggy I have to bang it hard for it to work, but I guess that hardly matters in this case. Just in a whiney mood... frown.gif

If anyone of you brilliant minds out there can help me out I'd be very happy. If my rig is just too old or it's a hopeless case a simple "no" will suffice as answer, but IF there's a very cheap upgrade you can recommend (MB+CPU) in the case I would love to hear it.

All the best

plz post link to your mobo, google spits out some werid results. From that i can determine best processor which your current mobo can handle. If you are inclining towards new mobo aswell, then get this and you are good to go years to come.

From what I can deduct this is my MB: http://www.msi.com/product/mb/GF615M-P33.html
It looks like it from the pics and got the same spec as mine, but if it's the same version or not; no idea. The only thing I've found written on the mobo itself is "MS 7597".

Thanks for the links. Gonna have a look at them, but since Im from Sweden I'll have to search local stuff which might be slightly more expensive. I dont have money for it now anyway but it's great for future reference, so tnx again smile.gif

If you can pick up a used phenom II quad core and, it would be a huge upgrade for you without spending a lot of cash. It should go right in your current mobo.

I had pretty good luck OC'ing an Athlon II x2. That may help in the short term.

The link you posted says your board supports these CPU. I would look around for a Phenom or better yet a 95W Thuban. You may need to update your bios as well.

Here is a list from this forum.

Here's the thing. I actually found that exact CPU in the store I bought the GFX-card and memory. I was granted 4000skr (~620$) in credit from their affiliate bank but only used 1668skr (258$). The Phenom 965 is 120 bucks which is actually in my budget/credit.
My immidiate thought though:
Will the upgrade from my current Athlon to that Phenom be so good I wont have to upgrade either mobo nor CPU in ... a long while? As for now I only use the comp for gaming (Diablo3 only for the moment), watching streams and video. Most often all of it at the same time tongue.gif Will a quad CPU multitask that better than my x2 btw? I have no idea of how multicore CPU's work...

Edit to reply to BenC:

I have the latest BIOS according to LiveUpdate5. Spent 5 hours+ last month to flash it. They really dont make that stuff easy for a guy like me... tongue.gif But what a feeling when I finally made it work! smile.gif
I've never heard of a Thuban, nor can I find it in my MB's supported list and lastly: the store I mentioned above doesnt have it in stock. If the upgrade from Athlon > Phenom is justified I think I'll just stick to that.

Thank you all for your help though. Much appreciated!

Edit 2: Oh! I just noticed that you werent talking about a processor brand but the core name! It's still not in stock in the store though...

The only review I found of Phenom 965 which had a comparason to Athlon x2 250 was this: http://www.legitreviews.com/article/1037/1/

I cant decypher the information though...
AMD Phenom II X4 965 BE 4 3.4GHz 2+6MB 4000MHz AM3 140W
vs
AMD Athlon II X2 250 2 3.0GHz 2MB 4000MHz AM3 65W

I understand the 965 is .4GHz faster, but is that much in comparason?
It has twice the cores, but will that make much difference in what I use the comp for as mentioned in the last post?
2+6MB is L2/L3 cashe. Nooo frikking idea what that is...
Both has 4000MHz HT bus speed. Again, no frikking idea...

Im really enjoying this. I learn ALOT today. But I hope you bear with me in my confusion. This must seem like childs play for you experts, but treat me as an idiot, because I really feel like one right now smile.gif

The Phenoms are getting a little long in the tooth, but are an excellent processor. You will see a significant improvement.

AFAIK, Steamroller (out next year) will still be AM3+. So you could upgrade your motherboard, and get a phenom. Then save up for steamroller when it launches. On the other hand I am sure there will be new chipsets by next year (1090fx) or the equivalent nVidia. With that in mind it may be worth it to just get a phenom, then save up to do a new MB/CPU later.

Personally, coming from the cpu you have, I would buy the phenom and call it good.

Then it's decided. I just sent a mail to the store to check if I simply can add the Phenom 965 to my old credit which I havent used up, and if that passes I'll just buy it.

I'm currently on sickleave and been for quite a long time, but on my way back so I predict a big raise in income soon. Next year I'll definately upgrade to something WICKED!

I concider this a solved issue now. Im very relieved that I didnt decide ot OC. That stuff is nervewrecking for me... Thanks BenC, John1016 and Tomus for your help. +cred to John1016 for the best sig I've read, ever (Im newlywed and madly in love but I can understand your decition fully wink.gif)
