External Rad Box+ (Questions Power+Setup)

So I built my sig rig a little while ago now, and overall I am happy. However, as of recently, my ambients have started to rise and I would prefer not to lower my OC as much as I have been. On long gaming sessions when both the CPU and GPU are taxed. I am netting a 17 degree delta water to air with fans on max. This is not sufficient. With summer around the corner, I am looking to upgrade my cooling. My idea is a little extreme for my setup, but I am looking for an external rad box since I have ZERO space left in my case and need more.

I want to remove the radiator from my PC and only run 1/2 fan(s) in it for the mobo and ram. I would like 2 360 rads and 2 240 rads. I would like to make a 2/3 5.25 bay section for my aquaero 5 and a reservoir. The box will sit somewhere between 5-10 ft from the PC. This means an addition of 10-20 ft of tubing.

I am currently looking at:
Tube res in case (for looks) -> CPU -> GPU -> Tube to external box -> Rad 360 -> Rad 240 -> Rad 240 -> Rad 360 -> Aquaero5 block-> Res before pump -> Pump -> Tube to PC -> Tube Res

The res->pump may go before or after rads, but that pretty irrelevant. My question is, are 2 D5 pumps enough for this? Part of the reason for the extreme setup is the reduce delta from 17C max to 10C max and also to reduce max fan speed from 1200 to sub 800. Also, if I decide to run multiple GPUs in the future, I dont have to redesign everything.

Question 2 is, will an extended molex plug provide enough power for the list below, or should I add a power supply and link a startup jumper?

1 Aquaero5 LT w/ 2 Flow sensors, Fill level indicator, 2 Water Temperature Sensors
1 Multiswitch
2 D5 pumps
15 AP13 Fans (3 intakes per rad and 3 exhausts for case)

I am completely in the design phase atm. Some parts are subject to change location, but I would rather max spec for power reasons.

I have powered my external rad box with a Picopsu.

That 1 molex on the picopsu runs into a Bitspower X station

i have to ask why use the 150watt picopsu?
it'd be cheaper to get a seasonic 300w tfx psu for $40 and do a bit of soldering and put a relay on it so it turns on when you turn on your computer

it'd save you $15 and give you double the output for fans, you could easily power a pump and a ton of fans with a setup like that

You don't list the actual brand of radiators or the model of waterblocks you are going to use, so I'd only be guessing if 2x D5 pumps would be adequate, because I have no idea how restrictive the rads or waterblocks might be.

If you had 2x 360mm and 2x 240mm radiators, you shouldn't have much trouble at all (if any) maintaining <10C deltas - even if you only had fans mounted on one side of those radiators in either push or pull configuration. If you had fans mounted on both sides of all four of those radiators, you'd actually end up closer to ~5C delta smile.gif

FYI - there was a user review a while back that showed a single MO-RA3 Pro radiator with 9x 120mm fans achieved a <10C delta and with 18x 120mm fans it achieved ~5C delta - and it only used 2x DDC pumps and the fans were all low rpm fans wink.gif

As for powering all the fans, most 120mm fans consume <2W@12v - so 18x 120mm fans would consume ~36W @ 12v, so any cheap PC PSU would work fine and would be your easiest option.

If you wanted to get creative, you could connect your fans across the 4 channels of a Lamptron fan controller, then power the fan controller by a 12v/5A power source (something like THIS) - you'd have to cut the low voltage barrel plug off and solder on a molex connector so it can easily plug into the fan contoller smile.gif

Thanks for the replies. My cable has been out since posting this. I plan on using SR1s or RX rads. Interesting stuff about the MO-RA3.

If you want to get the rads "outside" take a look at my Rog-Box build log in my linky. Keeps the room temps in check and gets the heat dumped outside. Costs less electricity (no need to run ac full blast in the house to keep constant temps). Cost of parts without pumps is like 200$.

Seems like a little too complicated. My current arrangement is:

(Externally)
Res->Pump (MCP655)->Rad (RX480)

(5 feet of tube)
CPU
GPU1
GPU2
Mobo VRM's
(5 feet of tube) -> Repeat

What you need is to get a cheap 4 pin molex extension, plug it into your case psu, cut off the connector on the other end, and then solder some 22 awg wire to the yellow wire and black. Run it along with the tubes going to the external box to power your fans. You absolutely do not need to have an external psu or thick wire. 22 awg can handle 100W or more at 12V. If you need a molex plug you can do the same thing (soldering) at the other end with a connector. $5 and it'll work just as well as anything else.

Re: the crazy number of rads (1200 mm to be exact). 1850rpm Gentle Typhoons...4 of them at the same time I can barely hear from a foot away. Let alone 6' or more.

Someone else can chime in, but I don't think # of rads needs to increase when ambient temperature increases. Say ambient becomes 130F and your loop is 135F. You don't need 100 rads to get down 5F.

I just use 9x1 splitter (7 bucks) and extra extra long 3pin cable (6 bucks) for fan power. KISS works best here.

Seaching threads on external Rad and Pump cases. Just wondering, were you able to find a case to house the radiator and pump or did you build one yourself? I'd like to house three 360 Radiators and the pump in an external case and was wondering how you did yours.

I kind of did an external pedestal thing, I was powering it with one of those plugs that goes ac-dc 4 pin molex it worked great but it was weird to have to plug it in first then turn on the power switch.
It did work well, but later on I decided to just use my psu for it's main power source.
I think it would be better to just use one power supply to power it all, like another poster said you prolly don't need all that radiator but this is ocn after all.

I would like to see your final set-up this could be interesting.
