NZXT Nemesis Case USB electric arching

Thread Starter
I have noticed that every once in awhile my case will cause arching with my USB ports when i plug a USB device in. It also happens when i touch my case around the side at times too. It will sometimes reset my computer or it will not at other times. But I am so fearful because it will do it at inopportune times when i need to get something done.

I asked my friend about it and he said he has a similar complaint with his computer case. I'm not exactly sure what he has but his has a window side case too with lights and such.

I'm not exactly sure what might be causing this, could anyone give me any pointers.

Is it static electricity or a real electric arc?

If your friend lives in the same area it might have something to do with your area's wiring.

Definitely not safe for your components. Is your case sitting on carpet? Are you sitting on carpet? Is it dry out?

well it happens pretty much when i am putting the usb device into the port, so i would say it is not just static.

The case is not on carpet, it's residing 2 inches above on my desk bottom. I live in Arizona so it's always dry out, but this doesn't happen to my dads or brothers case which isn't as flashy.

Ok, does this issue happen with all your USB ports or just this one? Check if the plastic tab inside the port is not broken or cracked. Make sure the 4-pins inside the USB port aren't loose either. Usually a system with shutdown if a USB shorts.

Run a wire from the metal part on the usb port to your case to ground it better. Your lucky it hasn't shorted your mobo out yet. I've seen a lot of this at work where the front usb ports are either not grounded to the case or done very poorly.

Well here are some pictures of what we have going on. It doesn't look like we have any grounding directly to the case. I think it's trying to use the USB ground wire to ground out the shroud around the outside. It just doesn't seem to be effective at all.
