HP Pavilion a6700z as an HTPC?

Thread Starter
I've got a HP Pavilion a6700z lying around in parts , i want to put it together and make it an HTPC for the whole family to watch movies and so ! I also have this http://www.xigmatek.com/product.php?productid=5 cpu cooler since temps tend to get a bit high here in Greece and back in Australia and a MSI HD 6770\ Nvidia GeForce 7950X2 graphic cards , is it possible to mount said cooler on the motherboard? Which of the gpu should i use for HD Movies? Thanx in advance

Anyone? I really need to know if it's worth putting the parts together and buying a new HDD redface.gif

Yes mate , the cooler will fit on you MB , just check the height to make sure it fits in the case.
AMDs retention system is the same for 939, AM2, AM3 / 3+. as for the card, the 6670 is more than enough for what you want to do.

I'd say its worth getting a less powerful gpu unless you want to play games on it too. Those cards aren't exactly quiet! A passive nvidia gt610 gets my vote at the moment purely for playing media

The 7950 X2 is about 24 GFlop/s processing power (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_Nvidia_graphics_processing_units#GeForce_7_.287xxx.29_series), the HD 6770 is 1360 GFlop/s (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_AMD_graphics_processing_units#Northern_Islands_.28HD_6xxx.29_series) so the ATI card is about 500x the theoretical power of your 7950 x2. Because of the difference in architecture though that's not a precise comparison but still, it's considerably better.

The ATI card should do audio out over HDMI too and since it's a single card rather than dual PCB it should be quieter, cooler and more efficient so if you really don't want to stretch your budget $45 to one of these (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121641) then use that initially. ATI cards don't play as well with linux so you could be looking at issues there if you ever went down that route.

But, neither is an ideal solution for a purely media PC but try them out for yourself and see I guess.

A passive card is really what you want though and the Geforce cards from the 200 series can do lossless audio out over HDMI which again, is something you should want. I had a passive cooled GT240 and it was perfect for a media PC.

I'll go with the 6770 as it has an HDMI , but yeah , i remember those long gaming sessions where the card would scream , it's not at all quiet -_-

haha, good luck! If they're truly spare, you could probably ebay the 6770 and get a passive gt 610 with change
