i7-970 3.65Ghz should i increase ?

Thread Starter
hello i have a i7-970 on 3.65Ghz with a multiplier on 25 and a Bclk on 146
should i try to get it to 4Ghz ? i have a cooler master v8 cooler and atm with prime95 after 20 minutes
its maximum temperature was on 63 degree

66c means you have at least 10c to play with... if you don't use maximum load on your CPU very often. I had my 920 at 70c rendering graphics for hours on end for close to 2 years now and it's still going strong. Most users say 80c core temp is safe for 24/7. I kept my core temp at 70c / OC down being conservative and was really running long hours at 100% load.

you wont see any real world performance gain, and very minimal benchmarking performance gain from going from 3.6 to 4. not worth the effort... play games and have fun! thumb.gif

Sean makes a valid point.

Did you notice an real difference going for stock (3.2-3.45GHz) to 3.65GHz? That's about the same performance increase as going from 3.65GHz to 4.0GHz.

Could do with some info about your set-up. What is your vcore and QPI voltage?

You should able to get that up to around 3.85GHz with a multiplier of 25 and a Bclk of 154 with a vcore of 1.2-1.22 and QPI of 1.235 and Uncore Frequency around 3.0-3.3GHz.. If those voltage settings are not higher than what you currently have why not give it a go? More performance and will hardly make a difference to temps. 4GHz requires a lot more voltage so don't go there.

it would be really helpful to fill out your rigbuilder so we could see what hardware you are working with.

I have an i7-970 in my 2nd rig that I run 24/7 at 21x200 with 1.3vcore and 1.25v qpi, ymmv depending on your board, ram etc.
