Friends building a computer and I'm helping him pick parts. He's building it so he can play vangaurd. This is what he picked out so far, he's wary but I'm talking him into overclocking it.

________________

He would like to not go above the price and of course lower is always better.
I have to admit I was surprised, he's not to computer literate and he made up this list himself, another nudge or two and I think he'll have set.

He could save abit by getting a cheaper case and then maybe he could get an E6300 instead of the E6400 and then use the money to get better cooling and/or a x-fi. You can overclock the E6300 just as well as the E6400 tbh.

Well with a set up like that there really isnt any need to overclock it as it would no doubt run near enough every game on the market atm

Yeah, you always have to be careful when messing with someone's computer that isn't y ours. I mean he could get him a successful OC and then something totally unrelated to the OC could harm his computer and guess what his friend is going to say? Thats just been my experience with OCing for other people.

Also, the RAM you are getting him isn't too great at overclocking. You are going to end up with PROMOS ICs which don't OC worth a damn at all. They will run fine stock though at Cas 5. But he may have to underclock them to get them to perform well if he OCs his computer. I'd get different stuff myself.

If you want to save him some money, I've read that you can OC a 7900GS to 7900GT speeds, so that's something you may also want to consider. http://www.3davenue.com/1688.html

The DS3 is a good board for the C2Ds.

Other than that, I'd say you have a nice rig there for him!

My mistake:
PC6400 TWIN2X 5.0-5-5-12 are Micron D9DQW (BT-37E)

Should be fine.

Here comes Chozart... He'll let you know whats up lol

Cheaper, and imo a better rig. You can replace the video card to the 7900 if you want to. But, the Dell 20" is so much an upgrade for just $40 more than your pick that it should not be ignored!

don't forget cooling and a DVD player

alrighty, first thanks for the imput, that's why I love this site. The moniter he's getting as a present from his parents so I'm not sure if he can get a different one. I'll throw that into the mix though. Also, I'm not to knowledgable on moniters so I was wondering what makes it better?

I thought about a 6300 but if he doesn't overclock at all, a real possiblity is there a big performance diff between the two processors at stock? Enough to warent the extra money? Also, he doesn't want to touch his video card for overclocking, not sure why. I would like to see him get the X1950pro instead, but I'm partial to ati.

I'll try to lean his towards the silverstone PSU, since it's higher amps on the 12v, the hard thing is he likes items with lots of reviews and 5 eggs.

He picked out the case mostly because he liked the look the best, seems decent to me unless people kmow of any problems with it? He already has a DVD player, speakers, mouse, and keyboard.

Oh, chozart, the S3 mobo is 124.99 so is the DS3 worth the 10 bucks more or should he save his money?

It seems to me that if he doesn't end up overclocking he's going a little overkill to me but I guess it's his money.

sorry for the long post, thanks again for the help.

The S3 and DS3 are identical in features and specifications... It's just that the DS3 has solid caps, and thus a longer expected life span (very long instead of long... LOL). And, on the 'egg, the S3 is $115. Also, the revies on the 'Egg mean crap to me... tell him not to look at them too much.

The 20" monitor is better, since you get a higher resolution! (1680 x 1050 instead of 1440 x 900). Thus, he'll see more! For just a relatively small amount more, you get a better brand monitor (Dell rocks monitor wise)

The Silverstone is a great PSU, better imo than the FSP (even though I have an FSP myself).

And do get the X1950PRO!!

well, we just talked and he's decided he doesn't want to overclock it at all. =( He going to get the silverstone psu and the S3 mobo. The moniter is going to stay the same since his parents are getting it though, oh well.

He's learning toward the X1950 Pro and most likely will get that, crosses fingers. I know the reviews on egg don't mean diddly but he won't listen.

Question, since his mobo defaults to 1.8v for the ram and he still wants the corsair which is 1.9v. Does he need cheap ram to boot up to the bios so he can change ram or should he be able to do it with the corsair?
