Im having a Skyrim crash over and over again at the same place. help.

Hi you guys.

Skyrim has been working really well for me until now.
Out of the blue Im getting a crash at the same place in the game.
Im hoping someone can help.

Im close to the city of Dawnstar,
There is a priest that has asked me to help him.
The two of us are in this temple of Vaerna or something like that... Sorry I cant remember the exact spelling.

Everyone in the temple is a sleep. Im supposed to drink this potion called something something Torper.
Once I drink It I live through someone elses dream. Im supposed to get past this Barrier, then wake up...

Ok so everything is fine. I get past the barrier and I activate this pull chain on the wall and I wake up...
Once I wake up I cant save anymore or the game crashes.

I can save JUST before waking up without a problem. But once I wake from the dream after pulling the chain skyrim crashes if I try to save...

I already tried turning off ALL MODS even though I only have a few. Didn't help.
I even tried running out of the temple so that skyrim would autosave for me. But that crashes Skyrim as well...

Ive never had any crashing issues with skyrim before ever.

Just before waking up there is a very cool screen blur effect that ends once you wake up, I wonder if that is causing it?

Like I said Ive never had this problem before I will get the exact name of the mission and post it in a few minutes...

Ok the mission is called "WAKING NIGHTMARE"

Is this a known bug? or . . .

Thanks for any advice.

It sounds like one of the mods is causing the game to crash. Try removing the mods, and then see if the game crashes still. If it does,I see no choice but to back up your game and reinstall it.

Absolutely not mod related. This is a confirmed bug with the game. I don't know if the Unofficial Skyrim Patch cleared it up, but as of patch 1.8, the bug persists!
There are a couple of work arounds to avoid this.
The first is obviously to not save during the entire dungeon, after you've used Vaermina's Topor (the elixir causing you to sleep). When you've completed the quest, ie. found and completed the objectives + treasure, use the console (tilde key) and type in coc whiterun to escape the dungeon without triggering the autosave feature.

Number two is to remove the barrier, leave the dungeon, save outside, go back in and everything should work normally.

Number three is to cheat, unfortunately. Fire up your console, write tcl - this is the Toggle Clipping command, which allows you to move freely - go through the barrier and take the soul gem. If you do take this route, however, every encounter except the final battle will be wiped. Put another way, every enemy in the dungeon will be prevented from spawning due to never being triggered.

Thanks for the help.
I went online and looked up a workaround as you said.
I did the one where you just do the entire thing without saving until you're all done.
Once you exit the building you can save again... It took me many tries because I kept dieing...
You fight a lot of bad guys through the quest so it was tough. But I finally did it without any console shinanigins. lol

Thanks for the help.

PS : Why are bugs like this not fixed ? I have the unofficial skyrim patch and all the other ones as well...
Doesn't Bethesda care? Maybe they think they made such a good game that small things like this don't matter?
Either way it was a pain in the arse. Thanks again for the help.
Happy time PC.

You're welcome mate! I remember that quest being a pain right from release. I experienced every bug accounted for with that quest, right from stalling in the inn to not feeling like walking up the stairs... As for the USKP not cleaning out the bug, I'm guessing the code is a mess in that particular quest. Which may also be why Bethesda thought "meh, to hell with that one..." considering they have been incredibly steady with patching up the many things which were hanging in a thin thread after the release.
I remember a dear encounter with the Blood On The Ice quest line. I didn't get to do that quest before my third playthrough due to certain events blocking the triggering event and yadayada smile.gif
