CPU Temperature: 85 C While Folding

I'm folding with the smp and gpu clients. I have an i5-3570k @stock w/ Intel's stock cooler and an msi gtx 460 that has a slight factory overclock. Whenever after a couple hours of folding, HW Monitor tells me that my CPU temperature is around or above 85 C (although under 90). If I pause the gpu client, the CPU temperatures drop to just under 80 C. The ambient temperature here is less than usual since it's winter, ~20C.

Are these temperatures simply typical for a build with a stock cooler and Ivy-bridge's higher temperatures? If that's the case, I'll have to invest in an after-market cooler, I suppose, since I do not want to shorten the lifespan of these parts too much. What temperatures do you view as an acceptable maximum while folding for extended periods of time?

Also, do you guys update to newer F@H versions as they come out? I read that the new version, 7.3.6, has options that can lower the percent usage of CPUs and GPUs, which may help lower my temperatures and help me continue folding. Thanks.

Welcome to OCN.

That's too high for stock clocks with a stock cooler. You might want to see if it is properly seated on the CPU. The impression on the TIM will give you an idea of the contact area. I run the the 70s but that is also OCd as well.

I upgraded to 7.3.6. There are no new settings, just a different way of doing it for the novice.

I opened up my case and the push pins seemed to be in all the way. I also removed the back panel of the case, where there's a cutout behind the motherboard CPU fan mounting places and the pins were all the way through the holes. With your overclock, you have an aftermarket cooler though, right?

Yes I do. Before I put the Ultra 120 on I used just the stock cooler and it didn't get to 85C, even with an OC.

I guess one other thing to check is to make sure the voltages aren't set higher than they should be.

My CPU VCore usually hovers around 1.136V under load, and the max it reached was 1.176. Thanks for the help though.
