Gaming/Video Editing Rendering PC CPU Choice

Hello, I am looking to build a gaming/video photo editing pc. My question is weather I should go for a i7 3770K or i7 3820? I intend this to be an Matx build with watercooling in mind for a later date. My 2 setups for the 2 computers would be:

3770K :
HDD: WD black 1TB
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136533

Mobo: Asus Maximus V Gene
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131830

PSU: Corsair or Seasonic 80+gold in 750wat
(unsure on which)

Ram: Samsung wonder ram
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147096

3820:
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 1TB
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148840

Mobo: Asus Rampage IV Gene
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131805

PSU: Corsair or Seasonic 80+gold in 750wat
(unsure on which)

Ram: 2x Samsung wonder ram
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147096

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Getting the 3820 would allow you to upgrade to a 3930k or an IB-E equivelent later, while the 3770k is a dead end. On the other hand, the 3770k has higher IPC, and I believe is easier to overclock. Either way, I would try to avoid getting a Seagate HDD, as their quality has been degrading quite a bit over the last few years.

whats happening to them? just degradation of their quality control?

I would suggest going with the 3820 since with 1155 socket line that the 3770K is on is basically dead. If you go with the SB-E option, you have room for growth and you will have support for new CPUs on that chipset. I would also just grab 32GB of RAM if you are going to be doing heavy video and photo editing since those tasks really eat up RAM. Change the Seagate drive to a Western Digital Red for a storage drive and throw a 128GB SSD in for your OS, some applications and have enough room to throw a project or two on it.

Other than that, it looks good. What GPU are you considering for this build? Nvidia for the CUDA cores or AMD for the OpenCL power?

I'd recommend WD Blue WD10EZEX over that Seagate HDD.

Every socket is a dead end. When IV-B comes out there will be a new chipset.

OP what programs, specifically, do you use for video editing and rendering? What games do you play exactly?

Anytime someone mentions editing or rendering everyone jump to recommend for the highest end chip, but even the i5 is extremely capable in such tasks ant hyperthreading really doesn't benefit video editing and rendering a whole lot, not nearly as much as IPC, which the i5 has just as much as the i7.

Do you really need 1TB hdd? How much storage do you use? The more storage you need, the lower quality everything else has to be to fit the budget. I mean it would be a no-brainer, get the 3820 if you just settled on a much smaller drive.

And no SSD in your build is fail, HDD's suck so much, only really need hdd if you are a pirate and ripping blurays illegally (sure, it's for your 'server'). How much HDD are you currently using? Plan your build off that. I was able to get an i7 AND and SSD in my build because I only used 50gb in the last 3 years on my streaming computer, so I got an 80gb ssd, which is faster than any hdd by miles and miles, and then put the savings towards an i7.

PSU is overkill, any 350w+ quality psu is enough for any single GPU system. The cx430 is okay at $19, i think you can find the xfx pro 550w for $39 at some places though.

RIVE is an insanely powerful motherboard, are you benching?

well that was a mouthful biggrin.gif Personally i have been on a mac for the past 4 years and its beginning to feel outdated. the programs I intend to use are sony vegas, photoshop, and anything else I would like to use in the future. As for games I want to play they would be BF3, crysis 3, far cry 3. As for the SSD problem, my budget is in the 1k mark so I wanted to keep most of the products over the life of the build, I do intend to get a raid card and a couple ssds in the future. For average storage, I will be using this computer for the next 3-5 years (hopefully) and 1 TB is my "If you can, do it". I think I got all of them...
BF3, crysis3, farcry3, i5-3570k is overkill for them, those games are quite cpu heavy for an fps though so they do appreciate the i5 (whereas in many games the i5 is overkill) but more than the i5 isn't really noticeable, at all. So you'll want a stronger GPU for those games, a Titan if you can afford it.
Quote:
so I wanted to keep most of the products over the life of the build,

That's kinda silly, building a computer is all about swapping out the parts and how easy it is to do so. You could spend $1000 on a GTX Titan that'll last for 5 years, and you'll have to wait for about 2-4years before any game can really utilize it any more than a simple 680 on most set-ups, or, just buy a 680 now, and then in 4 years get the Titan for like $200.

That way, you can put the rest of your budget into a better place (or just save money, you know... ). Instead of blowing it on some 'product over the life of the build', you get a better SSD, RAM, case, etc, that you can always appreciate.
Quote:
I do intend to get a raid card and a couple ssds in the future.

When the time comes, then get them. It's not very difficult. 1TB is insane though, you only really need that if you are ripping blurays. I haven't used more than 50GB on my streaming computer, which I use to create youtube videos, I save thousands of pictures too for ebay selling, I create content for my stream and save many of my streaming session. And that's over 3 years. Getting a 1TB HDD will be sooooo much slower over getting an SSD.

You won't notice the difference between an i3 and an i7, even in most games. But an SSD vs HDD, is a huge performance difference. A crappy $30 SSD will be so much faster than any 1TB hdd will ever be. It's fail not to just get some $20-30 32gb ssd and put your system on it.

You realize you can get more storage in the future right? It's as simple as just throwing it into the computer.
Quote:
the programs I intend to use are sony vegas, photoshop, and anything else I would like to use in the future.

What do you do exactly? Have you used them, ever, before? Vegas I believe cares about the GPU, so again you'd want to put more twoards the GPU than the CPU. And all these programs care more about IPC than multi-threaded. Really, an i5 is extremely strong chip, I don't really see the need for an i7 at all in this build. An i7 is like pushing the extremes of editing programs or professional level material.

I mean you can waste your money if you like. I mean more than 4gb ram for gaming, 8gb for most video editing, is kind of goofy, ram prices are only going to get cheaper and cheaper. The real atrocity in the build is that it's going to feel slower than my $300 phenom x4 system because you don't have an ssd.

Really you should get a ~128gb ssd, like an 830, 840pro since you seem intent on spending lots of money, and then get a hdd if the ssd is ever limiting to you.

In what resolution, 240p? Just my Steam library is currently taking 200 gigs, and my library is quite a bit smaller than those of many people here. 1gb will only hold a couple minutes of uncompressed 1080p video, and based on the fact that the OP says one of his main uses for the system is video editing, I assume he's going to be using uncompressed video a lot. He should definitely get an SSD, but he should also get at least a 1tb Blue or Black HDD for a scratch disk.

Also, I'd still go for the i7; CPU heavy tasks are being switched over to GPU, but there are still a lot of situations where either the software doesn't use the GPU yet, or the CPU yields a better result. Either will work just fine, though. Also, definitely at least a GTX680 or an 7970Ghz for a GPU, preferably the 7970 for its vastly superior compute (Vegas and CS6 use OpenCL, so CUDA support doesn't matter).
